Biography

The Age of Adz (pronounced odds) is Sufjan Stevens’ first full-length collection of original songs since 2005’s civic pop opus Illinois. This new album is probably his most unusual, first, for its lack of conceptual underpinnings, and second, for its preoccupation with Sufjan himself. The album relinquishes the songwriter’s former story-telling techniques for more primal ... Read more in Amazon's Sufjan Stevens Store

4.0 out of 5 stars very folky, very beautiful, very delicate 18 July 2006
Format:Audio CD
I got hold of this after listening to Illinoise which I thought utterly exceptional. I first listened to this thinking it could be nowhere near as good as that album because surely nobody has THAT much talent. Wow....how wrong you can be. This is beautiful, truly magnificent. It doesn't compare with Illinoise in its epic scope. But for what it lacks in that direction it more than makes up for in its extraordinarily beautiful music and singing. Yes the songs are pretty religious and if like me you're not turned on by that kind of thing don't worry, the music is so good that it just doesn't overpower you. Particularly good are the tracks "The Dress Looks Nice On You" very folksy with probably the best banjo music I've heard (not that I'm one for that kind of thing usually!) and "In The Devil's Territory" with it's building rhythm throughout. Other standout tracks include "Abraham" and "We Won't Need Legs To Stand". It really is beautiful throughout, very different from Illinoise but in its own way just as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars some albums you like..... 18 July 2005
By Jinbad
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
...and some albums you love. This is one you love. There is so much gushing rubbish written about bands, singer/songwriters - as Zappa so memorably said 'written by people who can't write for people who can't read' - but Seven Swans requires superlatives; Small is very often good - you can U2 or Coldplay us to death, but the gentle and authentic Call is rarely heard - an intelligent voice, coupled with sensitive, subtle and thoughtful playing, and to add to the mix - a genuine feeling throughout of spiritual growth, life affirming zest, and the ultimate pre-requisite for all really great artists - self deprecation. This is not the work of some self pitying slacker whining about life - but a real star, blazing his trail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Album 8 April 2004
Format:Audio CD
Sufjan Stevens reinforces his place as one of the leading musicians in the world today. Soft vocals over haunting melodies make this album a must have. If you like Bonny Prince Billy or Iron and Wine then you will love this album.
