4.0 out of 5 stars Louder than iPod earphones, bass heavy., 3 Feb 2008
By A. Butterfield (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I got these to replace the 'phones that came with my iPod Touch. I think the iPod earphones are too quiet, especially when watching video, which can have a very wide dynamic range. Watching video on an iPod in a noisy place can be frustrating, even if you've tried all the tricks to get the sound up.
So I bought these hoping they'd drown out the background noise, and even if they weren't actually louder, they might seem louder. In practice, not only do they seal out your fellow passengers on the train, they are also a lot louder than the iPod earphones to start with. so much louder that I nearly blew my head off when I first tried them! Top marks for loudness.
The next thing you notice is that there's masses more bass than the iPod earphones can manage. If anything, there's slightly too much, but I've never liked a bass heavy sound.
Perhaps as as result of all that bass, it seems to me that the treble is a bit subdued in comparison. But they sound pretty good overall. The sound is very 'tight' and 'robust' like a pair of good speakers - very clear too and detailed. If you travel by bus, you will notice a massive difference over your standard iPod 'phones. It's as though the bus is heavily soundproofed and all the passengers are whispering. It's almost surreal.
A major (but one-off) annoyance was the nuclear-bomb proof packaging. Before you buy, have a pair of goggles and a tool kit handy...
Inside the packaging (if you manage to get inside) you'll find three different sets of rubber plugs for different-sized ears. The ones already on were fine for me as it happened. There's an extension cable too, but the attached cable is long enough if you have your iPod in a jacket pocket. There's also a cable clip (clips to your jacket), a rubber thing to wrap your phones around and keep tidy, and a little purse-style bag to keep accessories in.
Comfort, by the way, wasn't an issue for me: I thought I might not like pushing them in my ears but they felt quite natural. One thing you may not like is that if you touch the wire against anything, it transmits noise quite loudly. You may need to keep still. Also, if you talk or breathe (...) you can hear yourself. Worst of all is that when you walk on a hard surface, every footstep you take booms through the 'phones. This could be a big problem for you if you plan to use them while walking.
But for making a bus or train journey more pleasant, these 'phones are light years ahead of the ones Apple give you with an iPod.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very satisfied customer, 30 April 2008
By Felipe Lopes (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've bought a pair recently and am really impressed with all the extras that came along with the earphones and the material quality.

These are extremely comfortable and I can even sleep with them as it was kind of an earplug.
Sound quality is pretty decent, however in my opinion these could be just a little touch louder. Maybe Sennheiser made them this way because they're in-ear and could damage ear drums, I don't know.

As I've seen on some reviews, there are the following "issues":
1 - You can really listen to your footsteps if your shoes have a hard sole.
2 - Every touch that you do on the cable is very loud, so, make sure the cable don't move a lot. Sennheiser inclueded and cable clip which helps in this case.
3 - When it's windy and you're walking against the wind you can hear it, but I only noticed it in really really quiet moments, hardly any music playing so this for me is not a problem.

These are the first in-ear phones that I've ever used so I don't know if these "issues" above are valid for every kind of phone like that or not.

Overall, I'm a very satisfied customer and would gladly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stick with the CX 300 instead, 29 Jul 2008
By M. Byrne (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Just purchased these headphones and I must say I am very disappointed. Having previously owned the CX 300, the cable split so I decided to try these.

The CX 400 cable has been shortened to the extent that it is unusable with anything that will sit in your pocket without using the supplied extension lead. The sound was also disappointing compared to the CX 300. I've just tried both pairs and the CX 300 had a much nicer bass, cable was perfect length and the "behind the head" cable design was more comfortable.

I love Sennheiser headphones and have owned several pairs over the years, from outer ear to these and I've even owned some Shure EC3 headphones. My favourite for comfort, value and usability is the CX 300 so stick to these and you won't be disappointed. All the positive things you hear in other reviews about the quality of these is true, but better in the 300 (and cheaper). I'm going to tape up my old ones and use those instead.
