Amazon.co.uk Review

Sonic Unleashed is built on a powerful new "Hedgehog Engine", which introduces seamless 3D to classic 2D camera transitions, whilst delivering a rich and expansive world with multiple paths to choose from. Under development for three years, the Hedgehog Engine produces a visually rich next generation look and feel with elements of classic Sonic gameplay mechanics. The Hedgehog engine will help re-define the gameplay experience for Sonic fans and newcomers to the franchise alike.

"By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love" commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe. "In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic… making this his most exciting adventure yet!"

Having been broken apart by the evil Dr Eggman, it’s down to Sonic to put the pieces of the world back together again by retrieving the power of the chaos emeralds. In doing so, Sonic will find himself in a race against time and faced with an unusual situation that will challenge him in ways never before seen. By completing a wide variety of action-packed stages, spanning the seven broken continents of the world, gamers will need to unleash Sonic’s amazing abilities to save the world, and himself!

The opportunity to engage in Sonic in different ways during the day and night time levels brings a completely original way of playing to the Sonic franchise, in addition to running at high speeds in classic Sonic style, combat fighting will become possible. Super quick Sonic’s speed skills will be highlighted by four new modes, whilst the all new combat, movement and functional abilities will offer depth and variety to the game. As the sun sets in Sonic Unleashed, a different type of adventure will awaken in Sonic’s newest quest….

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, addictive fun but room for improvement 4 Jan 2009
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
Do you remember the days when you could just plug in a sonic game and instantly blast away? Well sadly those days are over. When you begin this game there are so many cut scenes to get through and actual Sonic levels are few and far between. Instead you will find yourself talking to people in the village which is irritatingly boring and pointless or playing one of the many night levels where you play as Sonic after dark when he has transformed into a werewolf. I found myself getting frustrated as all I wanted to do was play as Sonic and blast my way through a level.

However, I eventually found myself getting used to the night levels as they are also good fun. Whereas the Sonic levels are all about speed, here you get a chance to stroll through the levels, defeat baddies and solve puzzles. A bit like Tomb Raider for kids. It kind of reminds me of the early Sonic games when it wasn't all about speed and you actually had to think about what you are doing. Every so often you will have to defeat a batch of demons and goolies in order to move on, unfortunately this does get a bit tedious after a while. The controls can also be a bit tricky and frustrating in these levels, especially when jumping platforms.

When you do eventually get to play as Sonic, the levels are just amazing. They've finally got it right. It is very fast and there are lots of different routes to take. It's nice that Sonic is keeping in touch with it's past, as it's great going into 2D every so often and getting the old distinctive chiming when you collect rings! Unfortunately, there just isn't enough Sonic levels.

This game is good fun and very addictive, probably the best Sonic game I have played for a number of years. It has improved heaps since Sonic Heroes.

3.0 out of 5 stars day is awesome, night didnt need to be there. 25 May 2013

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
1>this is the fastest sonic has ever been
2> this is the place where sonic started getting good again.
3> the levels look pretty good, controls are pretty accurate
4>the ps2 version removed the hub world which the other version have, this is a pro as i feel this games hub world(on the other versions its a 3d one, ps2 one is replaced by a click the house on the map style version) gets in the way of the game and adds nothing.
5>interesting boss fights, save for the last boss which spams a whole screen laser once you damage some of his eyes which is incredably hard to dodge. i never got past it.
6>the wherehog makes for an interesting game between the day stages
7>day and night cycles. although these are liniarly controlled when you finish a day cycle you will be at night.
8>skills upgrades and stuff.
9>despite how fast he is, you never feel out of control with sonic
10>the day levels look pretty good and are decently designed.

1>the night stages, people think the wherehog is slow. try double tapping up.
2>having said that, thinking the night stages are any fun. we will get to that in a moment.

1>the night stages. this wouldnt be so bad but they get repetative VERY FAST. its the same thing, likefighting the first battle over and over. the flying enemies are an absolute pest to hit and this makes the game become very boring very fast. you can pretty much just punch every enemy to death using the 3 hit combo. any skills or upgrades obtained don't seem to matter either.
2>the chinese level design. theres a chinesy/japanesy level in the game(night stage)which is an absolute mess to navigate and manouver.
