It's hard to recommend Sonic Racing games. You'd think that Sonic the Hedgehog would be great for a racing game. The Sonic games have been all about speed. Therefore, Sonic should pratically own the racing genre. However, in the past, Sonic Racing games have not been on the top of many gamer's list, and unfortunately, Sonic Riders isn't going to be high on your list either. It's much better than the previous attempts at a Sonic Racing game, but plenty of small things keep it from being the overall joyful experience you'd want it to be.
First things first, the plot is just about the same as it is in every Sonic game. Sonic and pals are on a hunt for the Chaos Emeralds. This time, however, they're after the Babylon Rogues to retrieve or something like that. A racing game really shouldn't have to have a plot other than to race. Not to mention it's very identical to many other Sonic games in the series. As you begin the game and all, you'll quickly forget about the storyline. As I said, a racing game doesn't need one to be good, and in Sonic's case, it almost hurts the game.
The gameplay is when I'm absolutely left at a standstill. It's great to be able to pull of some tricks as Sonic and company. They look really cool. It's easy to get into the gameplay, but just as easily, you'll soon find yourself frustrated. You race on hoverboards. Throughout each race you've got an air meter that you can use to boost yourself. This sounds really great, and it would be if you didn't have to use it so much. And once you've used up all your air meter, your character goes at it on foot.

having read the two reviews I was reluctant to buy this for my 5 and a half year old. I'm so glad I did!! My first and main comment would be stick with it! I agree at first glance the tracks, boost controls etc are tricky, but after playing for a while you can really wiz round. I cannot beat my son any more but in Tag mode together we can beat all comers! There is very little if any violence a nice change and boards can be bought/exchanged at the shop. There are many race modes to suit all, full on racing or practice laps to help get to know the tracks and the short cuts etc. The missions are fun where each track /level has to be passed and then more are added. We have completed all missions and had tremendous fun. These include boosters, grinds, air rides etcI would just say of all the games we have this is one of the best.

Let me start by explaining that the game play is not the reason I've given it 1 star. It's the fact that my copy of the ps2 version of this game has a save fault making it impossible to play the game properly. I have read others have similar problems with this game but I don't know if everyone has a problem or my copy of the game is part of a large bunch of duds. My experience of the gameplay is good, I'm able to save onto the memory card just once and then every subsequent time the game tells me there is no memory card in the slot and that I can proceed without saving (who wants to do that though). So I've been forced to save once then exit the game (turn off the console) then turn it back on to get another save. Time consuming, irritating and unfair. I've given up and gotten the wii version instead which seems to have suffered no save problem.

But, I will continue to review the gameplay now as the actual game IS very fun.

This is the sequel to Sonic Riders. You don't have to have the original game to play this one but it helps to know who the Babylon Rogues are and it does lend to the storyline to know about them beforehand. In this game the boards you ride on are no longer powered by air like before. This means that you don't constantly run out of air or have to top it up doing tricks. Instead the characters ride on ever-powered boards, it's all about the gravity instead.

The game plays out very much like before, you have the heroes story and then the rogues story to play, but Amy Rose makes an appearance as a playable character in one of the stories, the stories also need you to come first this time, not just within the top 3 (as early Sonic Riders chapters did).

The big DIFFERENCES with zero gravity is the ability to use gravity to change your course.

Sonic Riders is SEGA's first,21st century, attempt in bringing Sonic into racing terms. Although it is to compete with Mario Kart, which it just cant do, it is a reasonable game in its own right. The graphics are generaly decent for a PS2 game and the controls are reasonable. If you dont like Sonic then obviously don't bother with this game, as you'll lose faith with it very early. If you are up to giving it a shot you'll find plenty of entertainment here.

omg story mode is sooo annoying iv got to the green cave on story mode, but its impossible to do i still play normal races but i never go on story mode as much as i used to do
the only reason i go on story mode the few times that i do is to see the story parts but i guess ill never see the story after the green cave i mean, come on already make it so kids can do it a bit more easily and this 10 year old girl is getting verry fustrated
5/10 my lowest rating ever for a sonic game
