4.0 out of 5 stars Sonic Boom 19 April 2010
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
The main draw of this game is Sonic CD. I can't make up my mind whether this is one of the best Sonic games for its enormous size, or whether it annoys me for being too messy and sprawling. A quick runthrough doesn't reveal the depth of this game and I reckon trying to unlock everything in it would be pretty rewarding. However, the emulation is of the PC US version of the game, meaning not only that it suffers from the almost ubiquitously poor soundtrack, but that it also misses some visual effects from the mega cd version (water effects for example). This is simply laziness on Sega's part, though mostly doesn't affect the enjoyablity of the game.

I always liked Sonic R on the Saturn but now it seems remarkably easy, though well worth a quick playthrough and with fun multiplayer.

Sonic The Fighters is a fairly primitive 3D fighter, not worth much time but an interesting curiosity representing Sonic's first 3D incarnation. Personally, I'm glad of the chance to play this game.

Then the gamegear games, they're of varied quality and are pretty basic. I'd recomment Tails Adventure as the best on here. It's a different kind of game, slower and based more upon exploration and item usage than the average Sonic game. The biggest difference is that in the majority of the games the main character sprites are enormous, meaning that even more than usual you'll run into danger you never saw coming. Sonic Drift seems redundant when packaged with the technologically superior racer Sonic R, but I somehow found it weirdly enjoyable.

In general the gamegear games feel like padding to justify the pricetag, they run on two screen-sizes interchanged by the c-stick, though neither fills the whole screen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor deal for Gamecube owners. 28 Jan 2010

Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
    Why no Knuckles Chaotix?!?!?!

Anyway, the three main games on this collection (SONIC CD, SONIC FIGHTERS and SONIC R) are definitely worth getting your hands on if you were/are a fan of the classic Sonic games from the 90's.

SONIC CD is excellent and is the best game on here. It's not quite Sonic 2, but it's a little known classic. 8/10

SONIC FIGHTERS is a stripped down version of Virtua Fighters 2, but with characters for the Sonic universe. It's not a bad game, but it's a bit slow and simple by todays standards. Still, it's very good fun in short bursts. Seeing as it was only made for the arcade it's simplicity makes sense. 6/10

SONIC R is a roapy racing game from the age of the Sega Saturn. Although it's often dismissed as total crap by critics and fans alike, it's actually not too bad. If you don't expect too much and give it a chance it'll entertain you for a few hours. Sonic R was not made by Sonic Team and it does show, and yes, the soundtrack is as bad as they say! The game is by no means awful though. 5/10

What really lets this collection down are the GameGear games. Aside from Sonic 2 and Sonic Triple Trouble, they are terrible! I won't even bother mentioning them, they are that bad...

Gamecube owners never got the 6 GameGear games on Sonic Mega Collection, they were only on the PS2 and XBOX version of Mega Collection - Mega Collection Plus. So why aren't they on here instead?! Where the hell are:

    Sonic 1
    Sonic Chaos
    Sonic Blast
    Sonic Drift 1
    Sonic Labyrinth
    Mean Bean Machine

The latter three may be poor, but Sonic 1, Sonic Chaos and Sonic Blast are excellent!

And why no Knuckles Chaotix?!?!?!?! Grrrrrr.

    Poor show Sega.

I've been looking forward to Sonic Gems for many many moons, now dont get me wrong it's a fantastic game. But unfortunaly Sega have decided to be lazy an port over the US version of the Game instead of the Japanese version...
It sounds nit picking yes, but The big selling point for SOnic fans in this title is Sonic CD. We originally recieved the game on the Mega CD with the original Japanese music (*which is one of the best game soundtracks of all time) but the US version has a terrible soundtrack, so Sonic fans wont be getting the nostalgia they think theyre getting.
Also add the fact that the US version also is missing the hidden Streets of Rage 1,2 and 3 games (to get a kids rating) so your only getting half a game here.
my advice for Sonic fans, get a freeloader and a Japanese copy! if your new to the classic series though, this will suffice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonic CD rocks!!! 17 Aug 2005
By Mr. A. O'rourke VINE VOICE
Sonic Gems Collection will be worth buying for Sonic CD alone, if you haven't played this game before then you simply have to buy this collection just to play this gem (no pun intended). The other games in this set are a mixed bag really, Sonic The Fighters is ok and Sonic R is good for afew laughs. I m not sure about the Game Gear games included as i haven't played many of them before, Sonic 2, Triple Trouble and Drift racing are the only ones i ever owned and i don't remember them being up to much. Bottom line is that this game is worth buying simply for Sonic CD alone.
