Amazon.co.uk Review

For those of you unfamiliar with the Quake series, the popular PC game puts players in a violent world where the point is to collect weapons and kill as many opponents as you can. While not without flaws, Quake III Arena goes well beyond just mimicking this experience for Dreamcast users. It is the best PC-to-console port yet.

Quake III Arena is the first title to allow multiplayer, real-time networked gaming between Dreamcast and PC players. Hooking up through the Dreamarena servers, players can go online and shoot it out with other people around the world for the first time in console history. We played with a keyboard and a mouse--the only way Quake III should ever be played--and with them we exacted my punishment on more than just a few unsuspecting patrons, although they are a number of difficult levels to glide you into the experience.

A full slate of 25 nasty warriors has been rolled out for the Dreamcast game. The weapons, which range from shotguns to rocket launchers to lightning guns and even plasma guns, are also packed in. It also has all the nifty springboards, quad damage, space-age dungeons, everything we loved about our favourite shooter on the PC.

The Dreamcast version has a large variety of gameplay options, including: Single Player, Free For All, Tournament, Team Death Match and Capture the Flag, most of which are open for play in two- to four-player split-screen mode. The game's rendering engine achieves smooth and realistic texturing and stunning environmental effects. The environments are particularly great, with dazzling sky textures leading the way. Also, the geometry and large, detailed textures of the character models make them the envy of the console world. --Todd Mowatt

Product Description

Quake 3 Arena is one of the heirs of Doom, the first-person shooter that defined the genre. This version is based on the PC sequel that evolved from the single-player adventures of its predecessors into a network-based gaming experience. And since it is compatible with that PC version, it marks the first time players of any console can compete with--or against--the thousands of PC competitors online (PC users will have to download special Dreamcast-compatible maps for their computers). This version features 24 warriors to slaughter with shotguns, rocket launchers, and lightning and plasma guns, and 26 levels of maps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 19 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Video Game
This game is truely amazing. As long as you have 2 or 3 other people around and enough controllers you'll be stunned at what this game can do. I've lost many an hour to this game when I should have been working. Quake 3 has probably destroyed my first year at Uni, but it was worth it!

An absolutely top quality game, and the best on-line game on any platform. So satisfyingly gory and graphically beautiful. I have to say that it has great control system, even when you use the standard controller. Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Daves review Quake 3 Arena 9 Jan 2001
Format:Video Game
Quake 3 Arena a full game based around a multiplayer concept? It will never work! Well it did and it is very good indeed. The one player game is based around the idea that you have been placed in the multiplayer arena and must fight for you life. Boring? Repetetive? Well with 25 characters as many highly detailed levels and 6 diffuculty settings extending into the stupidly hard then it is quite the opposite, and this is just the single player game. The game really excels as a multiplayer and with the Dreamcast keyboard and mouse now avaliable the jump from the PC is seamless. You are able to play a 4 player game on all the levels choosing from all the characters customising everything from your name and handicap to your weapon FX colour, you WILL KNOW who is shooting at you!!!And with another 5 options in the game mode from capture the flag, team and just plain free for all you will not get bored with this game. Ang that is not all there is also an online multiplayer option where a game finally makes use of the Dreamcasts modem and vast power.Registration is very simple, all you need is the 'Dreamkey' supplied with your console and obviously a phone line and you are ready to play. There is hardly any time lag in the game with connections speeds being fairly constant and with no crashing and need for a very fast PC and other problems associated with the PC game it makes for very interesting play. At any given time there can be upto 1000 sights with running games and with the console automatically finding these it could not be easier to play. So this is a very exciting game, with lots of options, levels, characters and even a game for your VM upon completion for cheat access it is a very good buy. I play online as 'DEATH' so if you ever see that name appear in your game and flashes of yellow light come at you, run. Then we will see how good you are......... Happy gaming........

5.0 out of 5 stars QUAKE IS SUPERB 15 Dec 2000
Format:Video Game
Quake 3 Arena is quite possibly the greatest multiplayer Dreamcast game so far. It is a PC port but is so much better on Dreamcast it is unbelievable! The graphics are crystal clear and the frame rate is fantastic even in multiplayer games. The single player is great fun but is easy to complete, but multiplayer gaming is far better and is comparable to that of Golden Eye's in my view.
Right from the opening start up FMV you get a real sense that Quake 3 will be more than your average shoot 'em up - you will not be disappointed I can assure you. The sound is superb and there is a real sense of atmosphere when you play the game: each and every character, level and weapon has been meticulously designed making the game even more amazing. You may well have heard that Quake 3 Arena offers a full online experience to compliment the offline game modes - it does, and it is stunning.
There are so many characters to choose from, each having a selection of 3 colours. There are robots, aliens, skeletons, a giant eyeball, as well as many 'regular' people. The online play is absolutely brilliant. Firstly you should enter your player details in the player profile before going online. You can change your name, character and other options here. When you connect you must obviously ensure that the phone line is connected to your Dreamcast and then select the online option from the game main menu. Connecting will take around 30 seconds but you will then be greeted with a message displaying the number of online games available, no. Scanning and number found (I think there are about 901 in total!). You can either wait for the lot to download or just press stop and join a game that has already got people in it (you'll see that every game has an out of 4players sign).

4.0 out of 5 stars Where's my case and manuel? 17 Jun 2013
Format:Video Game|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I was rather displeased when I opened my package and found a disk sitting inside a thin transparent case. I was hoping for the actual case with the manual and cover, but instead I am stuck with a rather rubbish case. Having said that, the game itself is fantastic I would recommend it to any halo/unreal fan..if there are any..But yes fabulous game, great price, but that being said it does only come with a disk; no manual or cover :/

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake Arena rather hard to control 12 May 2013
By Matt
Format:Video Game|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is a good game but my only problem is the difficulty with controlling it. The controls are very difficult to get use to. I bet it would work great with mouse and keyboard but sadly for me, with the controller it is a nightmare.
The graphics and actual gameplay are fantastic.
