Biography

There are many lessons that come from age and experience, and when one discovers such a thing, one is compelled to broadcast it to the world. This is that. Sometimes those declarations sound like the cantankerous frustrations of cranky old men. But while this piece of writing you find in your hands does indeed center on one very important lesson, it will come with none of that “Back in ... Read more in Amazon's N.E.R.D. Store

I think it is always hard for producers to come out with an album, whether or not they are fronting as a band, which is consistent and shows finesse without trying to impress the listener or without showcasing their range of ability in order to collect more work/collaborations. I think that NERD/The Neptunes have achieved that here somewhat. For example, Timbaland's Shock Value was a blatant continuation of what he had been doing lately in the charts but also sought to show such dexterity of production that would afford bands like OneRepublic their first hit.

Seeing Sounds is also NERD's reunification project after their sophomore album. The single Everyone Nose is a banger, no doubt, and it is reminiscent in some ways of their first album In Search Of... which in interviews is what Pharrell said they were trying to achieve. I think that this album though will disappoint some people but requires a little bit of a listen. This album is very different to The Neptunes other projects like with Madonna on Hard Candy but at the same time maintains that distinctive "oh the Neptunes must have done this song" kind of sound that is attributed to them.

The production on this album is very strong with some really creative sounds in here. Some of the material manages to straddle the line of sounding familiar, if not retro, yet is strangely fresh and different to current radio airplay. For example "Windows" is Prince reminiscent vocally if not also in lead guitar. "Anti Matter" is another great track which deserves a single (I dare you not to bob your head) as well as "Spaz" which is a out there, luxurious groove track. The opening track "Time for Some Action" reminds me of the Busta Rhymes song "Gimme Some Mo" in the opening narrative and then moves into a great bass guitar and drums.

This album seems to follow a similar theme to pharrell's recent solo album. It begins with a series of up beat tracks with more current hip hop influence. From track 6 onwards is a return to the old classics of the first two N.E.R.D. albums. I personally prefer the second half of the album where the originality of the N.E.R.D. sound lies but refreshed and current, 'sooner or later' and 'love bomb' will have your hands swinging in the air and 'killjoy' is a funkadelic headbanger. The first few tracks are listenable and i'm sure will grow in time, there are even a few jungle rhythms on 'spaz'. This album is equally as good as the first two and fans will not be disappointed.

I downloaded this album primarily because of the tune "spaz". I listened to a couple of tracks first time round but then i just let the album play. I love it. It's got such a mix of fast beats, rock, and slow beautiful songs. I'm not going to over analyse it and put some pretentious critique. But i love my music and i love this album.

I loved NERD after getting into "Lapdance" from "In Search of..", buying the album out of curiosity and finding a hard core, funky rocky hip hop album straight out of left field. I was looking forward to more of the same on "Fly or Die" but was really disappointed by the album, which failed to deliver any great songs or even grooves outside of the hit single "She Wants To Move".

I was ready to give up on NERD after that until I saw them a few weeks ago playing live in London and was blown away by what a great live act they were. I decided to give "Fly.." another listen and buy "Seeing Sounds" after hearing some new songs that I did not recognise at the gig. On review, "Fly.." disappointed again and I was worried that "Seeing Sounds" might fail to deliver it's promise too.

I needn't have worried, as this album bangs from first to last! It's a rollercoaster ride of styles, grooves, beats, sounds and ideas that leans back towards the first album but blasts off into a whole new kaleidoscope of directions too. Each song is a collection of catchy hooks that are immediate but also seem to get better the more you listen (a rare trick!).

Other reviews have mentioned Prince influences, and they can be heard here (he is actually referenced directly by the band on a couple of songs), but this is the sort of album that Prince would have made in his heyday if he was born 10 years later and took De La Soul and Q Tip as influences as well as Hendrix and James Brown.

This album really has it all, from rock guitars to jazzy acoustic basslines and rave beats. If you love all kinds of music and want to hear something fresh and exciting, this is the cd for you. A must buy!

I have always been a fan of this side project from the Neptunes, their second album 'Fly or Die' was practically on heavy rotaion on my Ipod. I must admit I was not sure that there would be another outing from these guys as they had disagreements with the record company over FOD.

Seeing Sounds is really split into two parts, the first part is dedicated to MTV Base crew, songs like Everyone Nose and Spaz, but for me the second half of the album kicks in. 'Sooner or Later','Kill Joy' and 'Love Bomb' are the stand out tracks. The production on this one is sparse but it seems to suit the songs, Pharell seems to have developed more as a songwriter and takes most of the songwriting credits.

Like the first review has pointed out, you may need a few listens, but hey its worth it. Already in my 10 Ten List for albums of the year.
