A rise in stroke-like cases has CDC analyst Mike Shafer on alert. Patients in every demographic in the Great Plains area, from toddlers to healthy adults to the elderly, are succumbing to rapid deterioration - and death.

Veterinarian Donna Bailey, meanwhile, is dealing with an outbreak of her own. It looks like mad cow disease. But to be affecting so many species? Impossible.

Whatever it is, it's spreading. Fast.

As state and federal agencies race to contain the growing threats, Mike and Donna's searches for Patient Zero intersect at a big-game compound in a remote corner of North Dakota. There they find their answer buried in a secret thought extinct for 10,000 years. A secret entrepreneur Walt Thurman will kill to protect.

But even if Mike and Donna can escape the compound with the secret of Sector C, it may already be too late.

Because after today, extinct no longer means forever.

Loved this novel. Very well researched. The best novel I've read recently. Introduces animal issues without being preachy. This one will stay im my mind. Hope Ms. Sullivan writes more like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read. *may contain spoilers* 15 Jan 2012

This was a departure from the usual rabid animal story that I was expecting. It was well researched and well written, it was also believable to a certain extent.
You do really get into the struggle that Donna the vet has in trying to ascertain what the "outbreak" is and get a sense of how harsh livestock farming can be. Its like a house of cards.
I would have given this a 5 star rating but I felt that the ending was just too perfect and too rushed. Everything was just tied up with a little bow and after the initial deaths of cattle/human/pets and wildlife, I found this to be unrealistic. I also found the idea of endangered animals being cloned so they could be hunted as game unlikely.

This book started out great and I was really enjoying it. A little ridiculous towards the end however, worth a read for the comedy factor if nothing else!!

One of those books that you just can't put down. Very well written and a very good storyline. The best medical thriller I have read in a very long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read this in one sitting
Great story, could have developed some of the characters a bit more. Only reason I gave four stars was thought the ending was a bit rushed.

This is one of those books which, once I had started reading it, I could not stop. A whole new (to me at least) theory for the end of several ancient species. Read more
