Biography

“While driving though Chicago, on tour, we stopped finally to visit Wilco at their studio, The Loft. They had invited us to come check it out several times over the years, but this would finally be the day. It’s a great place—a sea of instruments in a relaxed, open working environment. It’s cool, but what really converted us was hearing the new Mavis Staples tracks ... Read more in Amazon's Low Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely album 5 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Steve Albini's production methods give Low a much drier and less echoed sound than their first two albums, 'I Could Live in Hope', and 'Long Division'. This works well, and the arrangements, although still sparse, are both appropriate and adventurous - 'Don't Understand', the most aggressive song on the album, is built around broken tape loops. As usual, Alan and Mimi's vocals are beautiful, their harmonies weaving in and out of one another and sending shivers down the spine. This has to be the most accessible Low album, and would be a perfect first buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars The definative slo-core 22 May 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is a truly impressive album. Despite it depressive nature, Secret Name contains some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. This album is a must. 'Two Step' alone is worthy of the price. I only wish I'd heard these guys sooner. Many an evening would have been more enjoyable if I could have populated my stereo with the undeniable brilliance that is 'Low'

5.0 out of 5 stars Will the night.... 28 Dec 2003
By Jason Parkes #1 HALL OF FAME
Format:Audio CD
Low's Secret Name is one of the all-time classic nighttime albums- the kind of record you could reasonably die in bed to. It's bleak and it's beautiful and it's existential and it's minimal...Here the three-piece band, husband & wife Alan Spearhawk & Mimi Parker (who is Nico & Mo Tucker at the same time!) with handy bassist whose name I've forgotten, are recorded by Steve Albini (Big Black, Pussy Galore, Slint, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Shellac, Mogwai...). Albini is the ideal producer for their minimal (yet vast) sound.

Starfire sounds like a stripped My Bloody Valentine- it stands out as much of the album is in the same sombre register, sort of Opal/Cowboy Junkies post-Spiderland. Two-Step is an utter heartbreaker, sort of Bergman delivered in a slowcore fashion (* the generic tag that appears to have been attached to them & bands such as Dirty Three). Alan & Mimi trade vocals, & Alan sounds like Ride on mogadon on Immune- which stands out in a resolutely downbeat closing half. There is a clue in their name: Low. "Tell me is the time that slow?/Only when your eyes are closed/Do you stand & wait some more?/Am I still immune?/Am I naked too?..."- the strings are very effective here, as is Mimi's harmonies. It ranks up there with a track like The Handsome Family's Weightless Again & Bonnie Prince Billy's Death to Everyone.

Secret Name, here with some lovely bonus tracks, is probably the definitive Low album; if you like it bleak, & wonder what Galaxie 500 would be like on valium, here is your chance! If this was a Velvet Underground album, it would be their third one. If this were a 4AD band, it would be This Mortal Coil. If this was a David Bowie album, it would be Low (the optigan & strings replace the electronics). If this was a composer, it would be Michael Nyman. If this were a dead-singer-songwriter, it would be Nick Drake. If this were a bleak song, it would be 'It'll Never Happen Again'.There are moments of bleak-transcendence- notably Will the Night- if you like the dark stuff and want the ideal music for nighttime, look no further than Secret Name....
