Another excellent outing for Charlie Fox - a real woman's woman but one with a gun and a nifty line in self defence - for anyone who loves action adventures and great characterisation and extraordinary yet believable story lines this should be high on your list of must reads. It's also great that they have released Zoe Sharps earlier Charlie Fox adventures on Kindle - a shame it's taken so long.

It has its moments... 31 July 2011
Format:Paperback
My first book about Charlie. I enjoyed most of it but not enough to go and seek out the others in the series. I found the character of Simone, the mother, poorly drawn. Despite what had happened to her in the previous couple of days, would she have rerally wandered off and taken her eye off Ella at the Zoo? Also the sudden death of a central character was a bit odd. Lastly, the granny is shown as loving in the cookie making scene yet within a couple of days her character has totally changed- not believable.

I love Sharp's Charlie Fox series but thought this was less good than some of the others. Right from the start this book feels a little forced, something which is unusual, I think, for this author. Unlike some of the other reviewers here, I like the books where Charlie is a bodyguard. Here she is back in America after her last traumatic outing, but something about the whole story just doesn't ring quite true.

The characters of Simone and her young daughter Ella feel wrong, and Charlie's sudden maternal feelings for what I considered an unattractive child just didn't work, important as they are for where the series goes in the future. Even the lovely Sean is less intense than usual - and makes a mistake towards the end which then has no consequences, something unusual for Sharp.

So certainly not a great book or classic Charlie Fox but this is still a very good read: I really like Charlie and Sean and while this installment doesn't really add any insight into their relationship, it does set us up for their move to the US.

If you haven't read Zoe Sharp before then this is not the place to start - and if you have, the series does pick up again
in later books.
