Product Description

Product Description

Aimed at helping Java developers, Servlet/JSP developers, and J2EE developers pass the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam (SCWCD 310-081), this study guide covers all aspects of the Servlet and JSP technology that Sun has determined necessary.

This new edition adds aspects of servlet/JSP development, such as the Expression language, and updated materials of servlets with a particular focus on using filters to make request processing more efficient. Covering the reliance on the JSP Standard Template Library (JSTL) and its core, this guide allows JSP developers to simplify their development process and remove Java-based scriptlets and expressions from their code. All applications in this book are designed to run on Apache's latest development server, Tomcat 5.0, and instructions on how to install this new edition and execute servlets and JSPs are included.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good exam and reference guide, 30 Nov 2005
By
This review is from: SCWCD Exam Study Kit: Java Web Component Development Certification (Paperback)
I've used this book as my main study book for the exam, I knew servlets well, but didn't know much about JSPs so I used the book for both learning and exam prep. The book organises chapters according to exam objects, explains things clearly and provides exam prep section. There are also code samples with every chapter which helps in understanding the topic being discussed.
A few problems I've encountered with the book, first there are errata that aren't mentioned on the book website and the sample code sometimes uses the wrong schema for example a 2.3 schema with new 2.4 features would result in Eclipe IDE flagging an error when doing XML validation. The most confusing part I found is that the book didn't clearly state the difference between the features available in JSP tag libraries ver 1.1, 1.2 and 2.0 and have used the wrong schema in many code samples. Also the book revision questions are far easier than the exam ones, so a must to happily pass the exam is to do the mock exam that comes with the book.
Finally, I've used only this book, servlet & jsp javadoc and the Sun servlet & JSP functional requirements and got %88 on the exam

The book is great as an exam prep and a reference

1.0 out of 5 stars Full of mistakes and hard to read, 27 July 2007
This review is from: SCWCD Exam Study Kit: Java Web Component Development Certification (Paperback)
THis book purports to be the only book you need for the SCWCD exam. However, its full of mistakes (some of them really obvious, like having option 'a' 6 times for multiple choice questions), most of which aren't shown on the errata page on their website. It also isn't that easy to read - I would go for something else over this book and save your money unless you can find it really really cheap

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Book Lots Of Errors, 28 Aug 2006

This review is from: SCWCD Exam Study Kit: Java Web Component Development Certification (Paperback)
I bought this book about 12 months ago to prepare for the SCWCD exam. Avoid buying this book. There are much better books out there. It is full of errors and typos, check out the errata online - it's not a concise list - there are many more errors also. They have even managed to introduce errors in question answers between the first and second edition, by that I mean they have the correct answer in the first edition but have miscorrected it in the second edition. Do not spend the money on this book, buy another one instead!
