Easy to set up and solved a problem - did not have to throw away my collection of valued VHS videos just because I bought a new TV whith no Scart input.

Purchased one of these for use with a range of old games consoles such as the SNES and Megadrive. The thing you notice is that when the picture is static the sharpening employed is very aggressive. Yet as soon as the whole screen moves the picture softens considerably.

There is no way to alter the sharpening.

Shame really as the although the device works, the level of sharpening is too high and the image quality too blurry when the screen moves.

Tested the unit on a SNES, Master System, Megadrive, Saturn, Dreamcast and Amiga and in each case the TV's own SCART input considerably outperformed the unit.

I purchased this for a friend who tells me this piece of kit is marvellous and has made his family life just a little more harmonious for a small price as it does exactly what it says on the box, and it has upgraded one of his old TVs for the kids.

My 2005 Sony dvd + hd recorder is connected via scart to my new tv and the picture quality is terrible, with 'ghosting' etc. I was hoping this converter would solve the problem, but unfortunately it doesn't. After trying all the various connection and resolution options, there is absolutely no improvement to my old scart to scart connection whatsoever. Whether I play dvd's or old hard disk recordings, it's still unwatchable. The enclosed 'instructions' are no help either. So I sent this pricy converter back to Amazon and probably need to invest in a current dvd player instead.

I use this box strictly for gaming, may I add that it also accepts 'S-Video' signal as the description failed to mention.

I tested it with:
Nintendo 64 (S-video & NTSC RGB (black border on right side only))
Gamecube (RGB) (Borders, but can be corrected)
Sega Mega Drive II (RGB)
Original Xbox (S-Video & RGB)
Dreamcast (S-Video & RGB)
Playstation 1 (RGB)
Playstation 2 (RGB)
Super Nintendo (S-Video & RGB)
Wii (HDMI) (Wii games should give you a full widescreen picture whereas Gamecube games give you borders left & right on the screen)

While all looking great, most of them suffer from RGB misalignment and you can't fix that. a Align button would be nice.

Motion-wise it does blur a tiny bit, like a soft smudge, but eventually you don't notice it much (At least I didn't)

It's not a 'true' 16:9 Ratio per se, It's more like 14:9 so they have borders on both sides of the screen (regardless of region)

Shame it doesn't have a '4:3/16:9' button, as it's locked at 16:9 Ratio.

50/60hz Button is great if you have a imported games console, My Japanese N64 ran smooth. (60hz lags a little on some PAL games. The PAL version Smash Bros. on N64 runs fine on 60hz if your capture card is recording it with 60fps however, PAL F-Zero x lags on 60hz)

I recommend that you get yourself an NTSC games console to get the most out of the device as most PAL consoles (up until Original Xbox) suffer from borders and slowdown.

The sound output is useful as I use a PC monitor.

All in all, a fun inexpensive plug n' play upscaler.

Perfect for what I needed - new TV with no scart sockets, old DVD recorder with 20 + hours of programmes with only scart connection, this convertor sits behind the TV stand and just does it's job without any fuss.

Likes:
Works fine with PAL sources.
Decent picture.
HDMI pass-through is useful.
Actually seems well made, not flimsy, the all metal construction has a fair bit of weight to it.

Dislikes:
Picture quality could be a little clearer and when compared to native SCART input, you can easily tell the difference.
Unusable with NTSC sources.

I bought this to use with a few different consoles, a PAL PS2 worked fine, as well as a PAL Nintendo Wii and a PAL Sega Mega Drive + Mega CD, but when I tried to use my Japanese NTSC Victor V-Saturn, the picture went crazy and jumped around every few seconds, despite the device claiming compatibility with NTSC and PAL. Trying the NTSC/PAL switch on the side made no difference. I tried it on one computer monitor and two TVs and it was the same problem every time so I can rule out TV compatibility.

On the consoles that did work, the picture was so-so. A little smeary and a bit oversharpened however it was perfectly usable.

I got the chance to compare a native SCART picture against the converted HDMI (on the same TV) before I sent it back, and the difference was pretty noticeable when compared side by side, it's much more pleasant through native SCART.

Conclusion: Good for PAL sources, unusable with NTSC sources.

This product saved me a lot of money! I bought a freeview recorder brought it home and realised there was no scart socket on my TV, which seems to be the case with many TV's. It was really easy to install, i basically plugged it into the TV via a HDMI cable and then from the box I was able to use my scart into the freeview recorder, I chose my HDMI viewing channel on my TV and I was good to go. The picture is fine, and recording are working great again. I would recommend this product if you have experienced the same problem as me, it is way cheaper than purchasing a new freeview recorder!
