Product Description

Product Description

The men of the SBS are the maritime equivalent of their counterparts in the SAS; they are the elite of the British Special Forces and also the most secretive. Although SAS activity has been extensively documented, the SBS has remained in the state it prefers - a shadowy silhouette, with identities protected and missions kept from public view. Formed during the Second World War, when they took part in many daring raids (one of which was filmed as The Cockleshell Heroes), they were active in the jungle campaigns in the Far East, in the Falklands, the Gulf War and Bosnia.

Since this seminal book was published in 1997, John Parker has been privy to much more inside information about the SBS's original operations and he brings the book right up to date with accounts of their exploits in East Timor, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Kosovo and most recently in Iraq.

About the Author

John Parker, a journalist and former Fleet Street editor, has undertaken many investigative projects in his writing career with topics ranging from the Mafia to Northern Ireland.

The text is well written and compelling, with a flowing narritive troughout the history of this select band of men. As the author has never served with the unit, the book has the feel of a sterile examination of an outsider. That apart an excellent and informative read

This is a great book talking about all the special boat services from ww2 right up to now, it talks about many of the famous raids by the SBS and makes you realise that there is more to special forces than the SAS, if your looking for a McNab style book forget it, this book talks about all SBS involvements and what they did and how they did it and talks about the bigger picture as well talking about MOD defence cuts which have created problems for the armed forces as a whole. if you have an interest in the marines or the sas then i recommend this book to you

This book Starts with the precursors of the SBS in WWII and traces their early developement, successes and failures in a thorough and entertaining way illustrated by tales of key characters (including, later in the story, Paddy Ashdown). It documents the parallel evolution of other UK special forces like the SAS (better known these days, but the SBS was there first and has always kept a lower public profile), including the operating differences and tensions between them, and the periods when they drifted in and out of favour - a pattern that continued up until the recent gulf wars. A real tale of heroes, or more accurately, superheroes!
