Product Description

'I'm not going to teach you how to survive in snowy mountains with only a tea bag; this book will teach you how to fight and survive war in the 21st century.'--Robert Stirling, from the Introduction

In the tradition of John 'Lofty' Wiseman's SAS Survival Handbook comes a new combat handbook from a seasoned speical forces soldier. Whereas Wiseman initiated hundreds of thousands of readers to the survival techniques developed by the SAS in far-flung covert ops in Burma, the Middle East, Africa, and elsewhere, Stirling's focus is on fighting techniques for the contemporary soldier.

Stirling, a combat veteran of Northern Ireland, the Bush Wars in Africa, and Afghanistan, provides a fully-illustrated training-manual for combat readiness. This is the stuff they don't teach you in boot camp, but they damn well should. Stirling writes in a aggressive style that will appeal to the warrior in every reader. He also serves up first-hand anecdotes and advice drawn from operations that went well--and those that went wrong.

Table of Contents: Why Do You Need This Book - Tools of the Soldier's Trade - Food, Shelter & Dealing with Weather - Medical Aid - How to Avoid Getting Shot - How to Avoid Blast Injury - How to Deal with Suicide Bombers - How to Deal with Bombs Under the Road - How to Survive an Interrogation - Defending a Position - Attacking the Enemy

SAS/Army Primer 21 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The first thing I thought when I got this book was how blinking thick it is. OK, it is not exactly paperback cheap, but there is a lot of book for your money, always a good start in my book. Being as SAS book I presume that the author's name is an alias that pays homage to David Stirling the founder of the SAS and maybe also the famous engineer Robert Stirling. Both I believe are from a similar place in Scotland. I could of course be over-thinking it and it is just a coincidence.

I've read a few SAS books in the past and they tend to be either very dry accounts of the strategic and tactical methods used or glamourized accounts of famous missions. This book is neither of those. To me it reads more like an infantryman's primer that is aimed at young men thinking about joining the military. After telling you why you should pay attention to the author and not think he's just some crackpot wannabe the first chapter is about your feet. You heard me, you're feet. Soldiers spend nearly all of their time walking or standing, so looking after your feet and footwear is very important. The picture of toes black with frostbite still makes me cringe now, which is probably the point.

You will not learn any ninja mind-tricks or secret Vulcan death grips by reading this book. You will on the other hand gain a basic understanding of what it means to join the infantry. Other than that my take on reading this book is that the main difference between a normal foot-slogger and a special forces hard-case is mainly the training and the will to never stop. train hard both physically and mentally and never give up. By doing those things despite of any issues you are faced with and you might be SAS material.

This is not a book for the historical collector or a fledgling terrorist, but I believe there are a lot of young men who could benefit from reading this before signing up to serve in the armed forces. Overall I found this a really interesting read.

Ultimate Guide 1 May 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Again an excellent book from Robert Stirling. A pity there was nothing like this around when i was serving. Easy to read and well illustrated, Robert gives the reader expert information, often with examples from his own combat experiences, each chapter is full of practical info which should help each soldier to sharpen his individual skills. It is also of interest to those of us who no longer serve but keep up an interest in whats going on in todays army.

Combat & Survival 101 - Modern Warriors Guide to Beating the Clock 22 April 2012

Combat & Survival 101 - Modern Warriors Guide to Beating the Clock

The "SAS Ultimate Guide to Combat: How to Fight and Survive in Modern Warfare" by Robert Stirling is a book that will teach you how to fight and survive war in the 21st century. It covers the salient topics of equipment, weapons, and selected tactics, techniques, and procedures for high risk military situations. The hard learned lessons within this book come from a veteran British paratrooper and 22 SAS operator with combat experience in the African Bush Wars. Throughout the book the author uses text boxes to illustrate our highlight specific information or tips and also provides historical vignette. Additionally throughout the book the author uses red text boxes of the reader to remember critical information. Overall I found the book to be rudimentary in nature, which is not a bad thing because special operation forces are great at what they do because they have mastered the basics. However, I think this would be an excellent book for the novice soldier or contractor and a pretty good refresher for the experience warrior. This book contains solid and accurate information and if employed correctly can and will save your life, I personally do not find anything in this book so incorrect that it would cost a warrior his life. This book does cover some pretty interesting topics, but is sure not to please everyone expecting to be enlightened to advanced topics of warfare and special operations. This book format and presentation somewhat reminds me of the book "McAleese's Fighting Manual" by Peter McAleese and if you liked this book, I am sure you will enjoy this one also. Finally, this book is profusely illustrated with photographs and line-drawings/diagrams, on quality heavyweight paper bound in hard cover.
