4.0 out of 5 stars At Their Request 1 May 2006
Format:Hardcover
I feel that Stewart McClean's SAS The history of the Special Raiding Squadron 'Paddy's Men' fills a gap left by previous histories of the Second World War SAS. Little has been written on this period in Italy that the SAS had to make the transition from the Western Desert and from the leadership of their founder Col David Stirling. This new book tells the daring deeds of the desert soldiers as they transition their unique fighting abilities to a new environment and again win. Stewart was inspired during the unveiling of the Mayne memorial in 1997 by men that served with Paddy and with their help tells the story they wanted to be told. This book tells their story and helps complete the history of the SAS.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 28 April 2006
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book to help with researching the wartime service of my father, who served with Paddy Mayne in the Special Raiding Squadron. I found it packed full of interest, with stories from people who were there. The books' title, 'Paddy's Men', says it all, in that it is about the men of the SRS, such as my father, and not, as one reviewer has inferred, about Mayne himself, (I think he must have read another book entirely!)

There are many good books on this subject and some that are not so good. Put this in the first category!

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading 27 April 2006
Format:Hardcover
I've just read this book over the Easter break and I found it enjoyable. It is, as far as I know, the only book to concentrate on the Special Raiding Squadron and because of this it may be described as unique. It's obviously the author's first attempt at writing a book and I think that he's done a good job in the circumstances. There's plenty of information here and many photographs that are original and haven't appeared before.

It's unfortunate for the author that his book has appeared so soon after 'Stirling's Men' and Hamish Ross's bio of Blair Mayne. But it has to be said that his account of the action at Termoli is much more accurate than those that have appeared in such books before. The libel that men of other units abandoned their weapons does not appear in this book nor is the fallacy that the soldiers of 56th Reconnaissance Regiment were green repeated. (One of my uncles was in this unit and was very angry about the remarks made by several authors.)For this less-biased account of this battle alone the book is worth buying and the photos are also good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gives a great feel for what the men of the SRS went through.
I found the book to a great account of the events that the men of the SRS went through. The best part is the accounts from the veterans them selves. Read more

My late father was one of 'Paddy's men', so this book has been an invaluable source of information for me, as it is about the men who served under Paddy Mayne. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Could have been done much better !
This book is a poor read, it walks in the footsteps of books much better researched, and it replicates the same information of Paddy Mayne and the SAS during the Second World War.
