Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By John Mann on 14 Dec. 2007
Format: Paperback
I have worked through I Samuel using several commentaries: Brueggemann (Interpretation), Hertzberg (OTL), Klein (WBC), Baldwin (TOTC), Bergen (NAC), R P Gordon, and Dale Ralph Davis. If I had to pick just one, I would unquestionably choose Davis.

It is basically a literary and theological commentary from an evangelical Christian perspective. This means, that on the one hand, it is not a devotional or homiletical commentary, and on the other hand that it does not deal much with critical and textual questions - though Davis is clearly aware of them. It does not go through the text verse by verse, though it is actually quite good for exegesis. As I say, Davis is primarily concerned about the meaning and theology of the text.

Negatives? Some people may feel that it has a rather 'light-weight' feel to it: it is very readable, and Davis uses plenty of anecdotes and humour. There is no verse by verse exegesis. To put it another way, it does not look like a scholarly work. In one sense it isn't - it is aimed at pastors and "lay people", rather than at scholars. Don't let that fool you, however. Davis is a very competent scholar of the Hebrew Bible.

I've used this commentary few times now when preaching on parts of 1 Samuel (I have never actually preached a whole book). Although it is not a verse by verse commentary Dale Ralph Davis brings his considerable skill and knowledge to exegete the text in a very thorough and helpful way (in other words he tells you what it's all about). As always he is very clear and accessible and make any work on the text or reading concerning it very enjoyable experience as your brain cells don't have to labour too hard in understanding what he has written, something certain theologians would do well to take note of! Written and illustrated with a considerable amount of his usual humour this commentary ticks all the usual boxes that I would be looking for in a good commentary. Added to that the price is incredibly reasonable. Everything taken into account I cannot say enough good things about it or recommend it highly enough if you are engaged in sermon or Bible study preparation or just wanting to understand what lessons are on offer to us today in the book of 1 Samuel today. I guarantee that with this commentary any of those things will be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

This is an excellent book. It gets down to the nitty-gritty of the meaning of the text, and avoids all those side questions that so often confuse readers.

Ordered one day, delivered the next! What more needs to be said? Superb. Haven't read the book yet so can't comment but fully expect it to be up to the authors usual high and very readable standard.
