Product Description
This GSI Lens Hood is primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. Fits the lens perfectly. Great affordable alternative to the Canon EW-60c.

Too tight

I just received this lens hood. While it seems to be well made, with a nice matte finish to the inside surface of the hood, the big problem is that it is too tight. It takes considerable force to rotate the lens hood into a locked position and too much force to loosen it. That's exacerbated by the tight grip one has to put on it to get it to rotate, putting even more force on the front of the lens.
I made sure to put the 18-55 IS lens into manual focus mode before putting the hood on to avoid damaging the autofocus mechanism, but it shouldn't take this much force to install or take off the hood. Maybe it will loosen up a bit in time, but I'd prefer not putting this much force on the lens until it does. In its favor, it'll certainly won't loosen by itself.
It's going back to Amazon. :-(

Yes, it is comparable to more expensive brand. But any hood this size, isn't that great at reducing flare. Well, at least it wasn't that much of a loss at this price.
