I bought the Asus Sabertooth motherboard to go with the intel core i5 3570k, 8GB of Corsair 2200mhz DDR3 memory, Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 3GB and the Coolermaster Hyper Evo cpu cooler, all fitted inside a Coolermaster HAF XM case, powered by a Corsair 850W HX modular PSU. For added va-va-voom I also ordered some red bitfenix ATX connectors and GPU power leads, which contrast well with the black 'snaggletooth' design of the motherboard.

My kids and I worked on the install together - I wanted them to see how a modern PC actually fits together from individual components, they had great fun! The two fans that come with the motherboard, and provide extra cooling to the thermal armour are a snug fit - there is no cut-out for the power leads in the mounting slots, so to hide them, you need to jiggle them in a little - but they work fine, giving up to two minutes of additional cooling to the motherboard after the PC has shut down, depending upon your settings.

There is a sticker / paper cover (for some bizarre reason) over the network socket on the rear i/o plate when it comes out of the box - I didn't realise, and had to take the entire motherboard out again just to get this off - Asus, take note - this is really annoying and unnecessary! The CPU slotted in with no issues, and the RAM as well - note the RAM sockets only have a moving clip at one end. The large CM Hyper Evo cooler fitted onto the motherboard perfectly, and the HAF XM has a great cut-out which is the perfect size to see the retaining clip of this cooler to check all is well.

It is the foundation of my new build it was recommended by many and ridiculed by some but overall I am happy with this mobo. IT has graphics onboard which I was unsure about until I realised that the i7 I was planning had HD 4000 built in therefore this board is a perfect match. Initial boot scared me as it failed and errored with a cpu fan error. Watching it boot again the cpu fan which was bundled with the processor was just stuttering and not working right. After the third or fourth attempt it booted into bios and I was then confronted with an enormous array of options and twekable settings. Its taken a while to get my head around all this but the first thing i did after reading many similar experiences with cpu fan was update the bios and order a new cooler/fan as the intel ones are not quite good enoguh. Saying that after the update the fan worked 'almost' perfectly everytime. I still say the CPU fan would not get upto speed quick enough to register on bootup. Teething troubles basically nothing wrong with this board at all. To be honest I like fiddling and this has been fun to learn and discover. If you want or expect to set everything to default and not fiddle I would advise something cheaper. This board and my new build is great the onboard graphics are more than enough to run full HD video and Sony Vegas Pro perfectly at full resolution editing. I am using my old Graphics card and am blown away with the performance of the onboard without any added graphics. I am not a gamer as you can guess but heavily use video and photgraphy therfore photoshop etc and have not had to wait or tweak anything to get it to look good or work correctly. Basically this board is cutting edge and I recommend it to all that want the best board for over tweaking their system and getting the max and more from their hardware. Slightly expensive but worth it in my view.

I bought this mobo for my first ever attempt at building a PC from scratch and wasn't disappointed.

It arrived promptly from Amazon and at a price lower then was available at the time from Dabs or similar sites. The packaging from Amazon was a little basic (a cardboard box with some paper stuffing) but the mobo and accessories themselves comes in a very rigid and sturdy box already, within which is an inner tray of similar sturdy construction holding the mobo itself so there was very little chance of damage to the board in transit.

Packaged with the mobo are 2 SATA 6Gbs cables and 2 SATA 3Gbs cables, 2 little 35mm fans to attach the mobo "armour" for directing airflow across the board, little dust covers for the PCIe slots that you don't end up using and the expected installation instructions and drivers/utilities disc.

The board itself looks great and fits really well in cases with a matt black interior. The plastic thermal armour over the board made me (as a nervous novice) feel safer handling it and installing it in the case I chose Corsair Carbide 500R Micro ATX Midi Tower White. The mobo fitted well and was secured snugly to the case with nine small screws - note that you may need a long thin screwdriver to reach down past the thermal armour to get to the screw heads once they are in place.

Once installed this mobo was running nice and cool due to the onboard fans, which make no noticeable noise above the normal case fans. The mobo has no old fashioned "vga display port" so be aware that a HDMI cable (or adaptor) is required to connect to most displays.
