I bought this having not previously seen any previews or read any reviews - I intentionally avoided them as I was aware that the sequel to such a cult classic as Donnie Darko would have many opinions, good & bad... No - I wanted to see this with a clear, open, uninfluenced mind.
I will spare you the details, but following the closing credits, I think it's fair to say that; (i) I hate myself for watching it, (ii) I want my 103 minutes/money back, (iii) I have near enough successfully erased all memory of said 103 minutes, (iv) I am planning a Satanic Ritual of some kind, preferably around a fire, where the disc will be burned/cursed for all eternity, (v) I've developed an uncontrollable hatred for Chris Fisher.
In all seriousness though, this film is just so completely unnecessary, which wouldn't be such a problem - I don't mind unnecessary if it is well done, except S. Darko is so poorly executed on so many levels. I am genuinely sad at the fact that Donnie Darko will forever share an association with this sequel...
Yes, I suppose I am what you might call a Donnie Darko "fanboy" - I've been in love since day 1, or 2001, so perhaps I'm "one of those" who needs to get over himself, e.g. "Oh I was a fan long before it got popular, the sequel sucks, etc."... If that is the case, then I hereby accept the charges.
I was genuinely relieved to discover that Richard Kelly had absolutely no involvement in this production. He is a genuine visionary (see Southland Tales & The Box), and I was delighted that he publicly denounced his involvement in S. Darko, which really speaks volumes.
The only closing advice I can share with you if you are pondering a click of the old "Add to Basket" button is, don't. All you have to do is forget that this sequel was ever made, and bask in the magnificent, STANDALONE glory that is Donnie Darko.
If I caught you too late and it's in the post, then I can only say, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!"
