Product Description

Product Description

For his final recording with the men and boys of Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum, Benjamin Nicholas has chosen to celebrate Britain s best-loved living composer, John Rutter. Rather than simply sticking to familiar classics, this programme explores the full range of the composer s output from 'The Lord is my shepherd' and 'Lord, thou hast been our refuge' to his most recent piece 'This is the day', written for the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Rutter s rare communicative gifts are given a special glow by the refulgent acoustic of Tewkesbury Abbey and the choir s luminous singing.

Review

Rutter at his finest ... plenty of technical control in the choir s singing ... gorgeous oboe playing too. --Terry Blain, BBC Music Magazine Christmas Issue 2012

Full disclosure - my nephew is a member of the Tewkesbury choir. That said, this collection of Rutter arrangements is a soaring high with its plaintive counterpoints that breath new life into these traditional works. You need listen no further than the opening (11 minute) track featuring Gavin Wells' trumpet and the choir's performance of Lord, thou hast been our refuge. Thank you Delphian for bringing out this fifth CD of the choir and its inspirational director Benjamin Nicholas.

"DELPHIAN'S ongoing relationship with the Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum of Dean Close Preparatory Schoolturns to the music of John Rutter, which in itself is almost a surefire success. For Rutter's music has that magical uniqueness about it in being able to straddle the school of light lyrical touch with that of musical sophistication and integrity. Sure enough, it inspires beautifully scented performances from the boys and men - works as varied as the substantial Brittenesque Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Refuge and sparkling Wells Jubilate to the blissfully quiescent Ave Maria - augmented variously by gorgeous solo contributions on oboe, cello and trumpet, and from cathedral organist Carleton Etherington." - THE SCOTSMAN

Interested work from a modern composer. Voices from the Tewkesbury complete the challenge. To be listened again and again with no moderation.

I have loved John Rutter's music for more than a decade. Here is some of the best of the best featuring the Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum. It is a tribute to the many facets of John Rutter's style. You can't help but be moved by is music and the performances on this CD. The sound is marvelous and the performances first rate. This is a must have CD for anyone who loves Rutter and his wonderful music.
