Totally absorbing...,
By
This review is from: Rutland's Curse (Paperback)
This is not only one of the better books when it comes to historical accuracy but one that delivers an absolutely first class read. I have not come across a novel that captures the Afghanistan conflict so well ... or one that displays such excellent attention to detail. Anyone with a passion for military accuracy will find themselves applauding the fascinating detail and the obvious hours of research that the author has undertaken.
If you are a fan of "Sharpe", you will be delighted at the arrival of Roger Carpener's "Peter Rutland" ... a character that you will undoubtedly enjoy following as much as Bernard Cornwell's hero for many years to come. JAMES CROLL

Rutland's Curse,
By A Customer
This review is from: Rutland's Curse (Paperback)
This story drew me into it and completely absorbed me. .
I was particularly impressed with the historical accuracy and the way that the clear description of the tactical situation was interwoven with the influence of personalities, terrain, weather and logistics. All this was brought together in a very realistic depiction of the Afghan campaign. The deep understanding of military equipment and technology- particularly of the screw guns and how they were employed - meant that I came away with the feeling that I had actually been there watching the gunners at work. The dialogue was excellent - it reflected the background and dialects of the soldiers, and brought the story to life. It was a great read. The above is an extract from a letter written to the author by Admiral James Stark, United States Navy.

Rutland's Curse,
By A Customer
This review is from: Rutland's Curse (Paperback)
This book, picked up on the off-chance, turned out to be a cracking adventure which I just couldn't put down. The story of a young British officer's experience in the Afghan war and his quest to fulfill a personal mission is true adventure with tremendous battle scenes vividly written with enough detail and accuracy to keep you caught up in the awful reality of war. Add to that heros, villians, intrigue, bigoted hatred and unflinching loyalty and Rutland's Curse has it all. Thoroughly enjoyable.
