Product Description

Product Description

Rutka Laskier, a 14-year-old Jewish girl in the town of Bedzin in Poland, died in Auschwitz in 1943. But she left behind a notebook in which she recorded her thoughts, fears and dreams. Some are the musings of any adolescent girl; others are the despairing cries of an individual caught in history's vortex. Now, after 60 years in the keeping of a friend, that notebook has been recovered - and it opens a unique, moving window into the everyday life of Polish Jews caught in the throes of Adolf Hitler's Final Solution. Hailed as the "Polish Anne Frank," Rutka Laskier now speaks to us across the decades: a witness to evil, a voice for the silent, and a timeless symbol of resolve. The editors of "TIME" add annotations, photos, maps, and quotations that help bring this tragic era into compelling focus for today's readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rutka's Notebook, 3 Mar 2009
By Bill Phipps (Leeds UK) - See all my reviews
I came across this story after seeing a documentary about it on late-night TV. Rutka Laskier was a young Jewish girl from a middle class family from Bedzin in Poland who along with her family and the other Jewish families were herded into a ghetto and eventually transported to Auswitz-Birkinau to be murdered in the gas chambers. The book is sub-titled "The Polish Anne Frank" but I don't think this really does it justice. Certainly it is a diary by a young teenage Jewish girl who was killed as part of the Holocaust, but there I think the similarity ends. Rutka was not in hiding for over 2 years in the claustrophobic confines of an attic - she suffered the deprivations of a ghetto - witnessed first hand the atrocities committed by the Nazi's against the Jews, and suffered the 'aktion' of the Bedzin Ghetto and transfer and death at Auschwitz-Birkinau. The actual diary entries are quite sparce - certainly not as full as Anne Frank's, but the entries are accompanied by additional linked material that put it into context. There are sections on "My Search for Rutka's Family" - Menachem Lior; "The Holocaust in Bedzin" - Bella Gutterman; "Something Has Broken In Me" - Havi Dreifuss which is about the writings of Jewish Youth in the Holocaust. So overall, it gives a much fuller picture into the background of the Holocaust - which is augmented by the poignant writings of a young adolescent girl caught up in the horror of the Nazi's final solution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secret Diary of the Holocaust, 18 Feb 2009
By Mr. Raymond L. King (Taunton, UK) - See all my reviews

Having seen the BBC TVC programme with the above title, I knew I had to read the book for myself. As an RE teacher, teaching Holocaust Studies and leading visits to Auschwitz, I also wanted this book to be available to my students. I and they were not disappointed. It is a deeply moving eye-witness account of the horrors inflicted on young Jews living in Poland during the war. The detachment with which Rutka describes the most horrific of events, and her awareness of her reaction to these events demonstrate the maturity she had. Thanks to her friend, Stanislawa, Rutka's Notebook survived to bring her stiry to us. Please read this.

I thought that the book would be longer than it was. The actual diary section was even shorter. However, the other information by third parties was interesting and gave an insight into live in Poland at the time of German occupation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Necessary reminder
The actual diary pages are few, but what there is shows a precocious talent who was cut down in her prime. Read more
