I don't normally go for straight up modern romance novels, but this book tempted me with its revenge plotline. If I am honest, I was expecting a really predictable plotline, cheesy dialogue and then a happy ending. That's not quite what I got really; The plot was more complex than I was expecting, the characters more interesting and the dialogue was actually pretty realistic.
Vincenzo's sister, Allegra, has died in a terrible accident caused by Cara's brother. He believes Cara to be jointly responsible his sister's descent into drugs and extravagance and that she was party to her brother's plot to steal Allegra's inheritance. He sets out to confront Cara, to make her admit to her guilt, but he is sidetracked by his attraction to her, a problem that has far-reaching consequences involving a pregnancy and a forced marriage.
Cara is a likeable character, admirably standing up for herself despite being at a disadvantage for most of the book. Vincenzo is a darkly-delicious and angry man. His attempt to control his feelings and maintain the upper hand is very readable. The characters are well-written and warm enough to make you care. I was really rooting for them by about a third of the way through! There's something compelling about two people fighting their attraction to each other.
So, I would recommend this, even if you don't normally go for this genre. I was surprised by how well-written it was.
