Review

Gritty and powerful, Martina Cole fans will love this addictive novel (Closer)

The novel takes the reader on a journey from London, to New York, and across to rural Ireland. What I especially loved about this story was the way multiple story strands were woven together: a coming-of-age story for Annie's daughter, Layla, and an explosive battle of wills (and sexual tension) for Annie as she tries to keep an uneasy truce with her ex-husband; all set within a deadly game of cat and mouse with a determined killer driven by revenge. Intriguing, suspenseful and thrilling. A real page turner. (www.crimethrillergirl.com)

Gripping right from the start and the setting of gangsters and East End London was great to read. I also really liked the character of Annie Carter, she's a likeable, feisty main character who takes you through her story at a high speed pace. This is a book full of suspense and tension and I found myself surprised by the narrative more than once. I'm now going to look out for the first Annie Cater novels and have no doubt that I'll enjoy them just as much. (Novelicious)

This is riveting, unputdownable reading (Marjolein Books)

Jessie Keane has once again created a brilliant, gripping and thrilling book which I didn't want to put down (Best Crime Books)

I've read most of Jessie's book and so I was thrilled to be contacted and offered a copy of her latest book Ruthless. Wow, what a book. (jayneanderson.blogspot.co.uk)

Part crime novel, part family-saga - a kind of Dynasty with knuckledusters - but Ruthless is slick and funny and polished. Sure, it's a formula, but Keane knows just what her readers want in her nostalgic tales of gals and gangsters, nightclubs and toerags, and she delivers the goods as nimbly as a cat across a fence top. What I Liked: Annie's a businesswoman with a string of clubs to her name, but it's affairs of the heart that propel the story. Keane's antagonists want revenge against Annie by targeting the people she loves the most - her family. It makes it very personal and very nasty for Annie. And the return of her ex-husband - 'fit lean body, black hair, dark tan' - makes the situation an emotional minefield. If you're going to write a story, make sure your protagonist is hit where it hurts the most. (crimethrillerfella.wordpress.com)

Ruthless is the latest in the fast-moving Annie Carter series and is just as good, if not better, than its forerunners. If you like a good, light read on the seedy side of life, you won't be disappointed. (Shropshire Star)

I loved the characters, they were very realistic, believable and I enjoyed their storylines. Annie Carter is a fantastic lead and I really enjoyed reading about her, I liked that Annie was fierce and determined. Also, Annie's relationship with Max was so fascinating to read about, that in itself was very compelling and gripping. Ruthless is fast-paced and thrilling with the right amount of tension and suspense, so I was kept turning the pages keen to find out how things would finish. (readinginthesunshine.wordpress.com)

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping Thriller 19 July 2013
By ACB(swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Annie Carter is back with another gripping fast-paced thriller that has all of the features to make this another outstanding and pulsating novel. Jessie Keane has taken Annie's life into another danger zone, this one potentially more lethal than she has faced before. Opening in 1980, Annie and Max have just divorced. Max moves to Barbados and Annie stays in London with 14 year old 'daddy's girl', daughter Layla. Ten years earlier, Annie's rival gang leaders, the Delaney twins, (Orla and Redmond) had arranged her death. They fled England to their family home in Limerick to escape the police thinking Annie had been killed. They went missing, presumed dead.

Jessie Keane switches the narrative cleverly and seamlessly between London and Ireland with clear time references. The action that takes place is relentless, latterly in London, with ferocity and high-risk life-threatening and dangerous situations. All the steeliness and guile of Annie and her family are thrown into the mix of the constant onslaughts, battles of wit and muscle power all as a consequence of gangland rivalry. Max, Annie's stepson Alberto Barolli, an older Layla and Annie's best friends, mens' entertainment club managers Dolly and Ellie, are integral to the plot. Humour, romance, power and loyalties with inevitable sadness crop up throughout.

This is riveting, unputdownable reading. The tempo never drops with peril and pitfalls never far away. The suspense and tension that the author generates in the storyline is breathtaking as the direction is never predictable. The ending is totally unexpected. A superb, well-crafted and written book that is exciting and enjoyable. It throws up many surprises and the only disappointment was that it had to end. Hopefully there will be more. Highly recommended.

Annie Carter was convinced that she'd seen the last of the Delaney twins, but when sinister things start happening around them, the conclusion Annie comes to is that her enemies weren't dead as she previously thought. 5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting Read 13 July 2014
By Aqua7
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I always enjoy Jessie Keane novels and this was one was no exception! Although I would not personally like to know most of the characters, they are real to me and I can empathise with their insecurities and foibles, if not the violence. The pace is good and the plot well thought out and written. Another winner!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great Jessie Keane book! 25 Sept. 2013
By Annabel
Format:Paperback
This book holds no surprises but is still a good read. Its standard Jessie Keane, you know exactly what your getting when you pick up one of her books but never the less i really enjoyed. I find her much better than Martina Coles' recent attempts.
Dont worry if you haven't read her previous books, you can still enjoy this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the characters come to life as the story progressed. Another successful book by J Keane. The details and the way the plot opened up keeps you turning the pages and getting you caught up and forgetting time not as ting to put it down. I would recommend this book to all.
