I recently made a gas bottle wood burner. The steel was bare and had been degreased with a paint degreasing product.
I painted the burner indoors at a car body shop ( you can guess these guys know what they're doing when it comes to painting things ).
I used a good quality brush and gave the steel a very good coat all over. I then used a set of heat lamps to cure the paint after approx 30 minutes. I let the paint bake for approx an hour. The tin says the paint will cure when the item painted is heated to 200 c for 20 minutes, I know the lamps don't get that hot (probably around 80-90 c max) so I decided on the hour.
The burner was left a full 24 hours until I brought it home to try it out.
I set a very small fire inside, as a first time I decided on being cautious. Within 15 minutes the paint was bubbling and breaking down.
The steel was hot to the touch, as expected, but I wouldn't have thought anywhere near 600 c. The fire hadn't really got going ( well not as much as I got it up to later ).
I'm disappointed, really disappointed. The paint isn't cheap, it's made by a very good manufacture of paints and coatings and they are someone I have used many times in the past.
I don't believe I did anything wrong, I just think the paint is not up to the job it's designed for.
Other reviewers have had good results and maybe I've expected too much from it, but as can be seen from the picture on the can it implies it's been painted onto the bbq or burner and it's right there next to flames. The other picture on the can shows a proper wood burner or stove, I'm really glad I don't have one of those in the house and had just painted it with this stuff.
My advice....... unfortunately has to be leave it on the shelf in the store and find something else. This paint doesn't work for items or areas that get hot.
