A "must-buy" for chess lovers..., 9 Jun 2011
This review is from: Russians Versus Fischer (Everyman Chess) (Hardcover)
Just amazing... stunning... Many many many episodes, many stories... I'm the type of player that's not much fond of books with chains of moves and diagrams;i love the ones with much text!
I don't think one can have a better image of R.Fischer than after reading the book.
There are also all his games vs Russian players - nothing very special about that;they've already been printed many times. But the stories... You get deep into the atmosphere of the tournaments, the matches,everything...
I have to praise the authors, and ask for an apology from them for giving a sample of what kind of "stuff" you'll find in:
A.Nikitin:
"In the spring of 1976 V.Korchnoi told me about the off-stage affairs during his Candidates final match with Karpov, about how it was suggested to him that he should lose the match 0-5, for which for five years he was promised the right to participate in any tournament-in any country, wherever he wished. Korchnoi, naturally, refused, and here it began!... Victor Lvovich gave a curious explanation for why he wanted to win against Karpov:"The point is that,if the Fischer-Karpov match had occured, the Soviet Chess School would have lost a young and talented grandmaster.Karpov had altogether no understanding of WHO he was intending to play..."
