World renowned Russian quartet the Borodins recorded this in Berlin in 1994 and offer exemplary playing and insight into music that is deeply ingrained in most of their country folks musician fraternity. as a huge fan of Shostakovich, Stravinsky + Prokofiev - the short pieces here offer new enjoyment insights, as well as intriguing new finds from lesser well known composers Schnittke + Vaynberg (aka Vainberg) with idiosyncratic + arresting works.
the late romantic era works of Borodin, Tchaikovsky + Rachmaninov will no doubt delight followers of their somewhat heady opulent soundworlds with gloriously rich ensemble playing from the Borodin's. for me - the real nuggets here are from the early-mid 20th Century composers : ascerbic + exploratory pieces by Stravinsky, as well as a transciption of selected Prokofiev piano works ("visions fugitives") and a rarity by Shostakovich (DSCH) of two early+ v.witty pieces. the Schnittke piece i have laready + is excellent. a stark+ entrallingly powerful work. recording clarity is very good on this Warner/apex budget re release also. booklet notes are a little minimal but at budget price no major complaints.
the artwork is love or hate - i hate. bland, unimaginative where some early soviet era art from Malevich et al would have been much more appropriate. ah well a minor niggle.
so - you takes your choice, but with first rate playing from the 2nd incarnation of the Borodin Quartet: there is much to enjoy and saviour here for fans of all things "russe". DSCH fans may be interested to note the Vaynberg work here is rather close to DSCH's intro movement to his 3rd Quartet! who "borrowed" from who i wonder ?! an other release i'd recommend is a collection of 20th Century Russian string music by the Chilingirian Qrt (on conifer classics) which has rather more austere +challenging + (for me at least) downright more interesting works by Stravinsky, Schnittke (as with the "Russian Minatures" cd - the same eery + Ligeti-esque "canon in memory of stravinsky" as here) , Smirnov + Firsova but no DSCH. search that out also.
anyway - highly recommended for the completists + obsessives out there.
