Book Description

7 Sep 2009 Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia (Book 1)
The photographs, drawings and texts published in this book are part of a collection of more than 3000 tattoos accumulated over a lifetime by prison attendant Danzig Baldaev. Tattoos were his gateway into a secret world in which he acted as ethnographer, recording the rituals of a closed society. The icons and tribal languages he documented are artful, distasteful, sexually explicit and sometimes just strange, reflecting as they do the lives and traditions of Russian convicts. Skulls, swastikas, harems of naked women, a smiling Al Capone, medieval knights in armour, daggers sheathed in blood, benign images of Christ, sweet-faced mothers and their babies, armies of tanks, and a horned Lenin these are the signs by which the people of this hidden world mark and identify themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff 12 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover
Ordered without many expectations. However, it is filled with many cool images and photographs and also a valuable text information. Well executed, nicely designed, big surprise. The only problem with volume 1 is that you need to have two more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden world 12 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover
In the hierarchical structure of the Soviet labour and other camps, the prisoners gained respect and honour by what they had done in other camps. These incidents and events in their pasts were etched onto their skins in the form of tattoos. You could literally read an individuals life story on his/her body as this revealing text shows.

This is a must for all those wanting to gain and understand the language and lives of those who were non-citizens in Soviet Russia. The other two books in this series are equally revealing: Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia Volume II: v. II and Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopedia Volume III: 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars good value 31 Dec 2009
By Mr. Nj Mcallister VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Very interesting and unusual book, my only criticism is that for a man who took so many thousands of photos over such a long period of time..why are so few of them in this book. This book should be ten times its size but nevertheless it is still the best book on Russian criminal tattoos that I have come across
