The three reviews below refer to the old edition of this book. The new version has been entirely rewritten and re-researched. As part of the team who helped write it I should leave the reviews to other people, but I think the criticism of not including Ukraine is quite unfair given that the book never claims to do so!

This book is excellant it covers comprehensivly Russia and Belarus. It has great depth covering Siberia, the Russian Far East and the ural region as well as the population centers of Western Russia. There is a seperate lonely planet book covering exclusivly the Ukraine as well as it being in the Eastern Europe book.

A must buy for any visitor to the Ukraine. Of all the guide books that I read on the region the Lonley Planet effort came out on top once again. It opens up this under visited region to the in-experienced western vistor, providing useful phrases and insights into customs and cultures. Well done to the Lonley Planet.

I recently went to the Ukraine for 3 months. This was the only gudiebook that I took with me. I found it invaluable at least as a starting point.
I spent most of my time in Kiev, but I also travelled to the black sea in order to visist Odessa and the beautiful Crimea region.
The book gives a good background to each of these places and maps on all the main city centres.
There are helpful tips and dos and donts that are best to adhere to.
Its major floor, regarding Ukraine is that theres no where near as much on it as Russia. In the case of Belarus theres even less.
Still if you are going there and you like me only intend to take one book - buy this one.
