Great price, quality in doubt with failure after 6 months,

This review is from: Russell Hobbs 15066 1.6 L Therma Select Temperature Control Kettle with Concealed 3 kW Element (Kitchen & Home)
Put cold water in, turn it on, a bit later you can pour hot water out. It's a kettle! :-)Bought this to replace our Morphy Richards perfection kettle which was very good, but after 3.5 years it suddenly went phut - I think the element just blew. Can't get spares, so had to replace it. I had got very used to the two temperature settings it had, for tea or coffee, so I wanted something similar and after a bit of searching, I found this one. I never used to believe it but coffee, instant or real, really does taste better made with water below boiling point. Full marks to amazon, excellent price, and arrived by normal first class post within about 20 hours of ordering. First impressions are very good - build quality seems excellent, it looks reasonably stylish in the kitchen, it is very easy to fill (sounds daft, but plenty of kettles aren't!), it pours well without drips or dribbles, and the huge range of selectable temperatures - anything from 60 to 100 in 5 degree increments - more than fills my requirements. The controls feel nice. There is no click or clunk as it turns off, the display just stops flashing. It has a button to maintain the water at the chosen temperature (apart from boiling) for up to an hour. I guess it was easy to add this function to the mechanism that was already needed for the additional temperature range/choice, but I am still scratching my head over what this might actually be useful for... It does seem to emit steam from just about every seam when it boils which is a little disconcerting, but the manual does mention this, particularly with regard to moisture appearing on the base. A bit odd, but nothing to worry about. I have seen a review on another site mention that the flex is far too short. It does appear that way out of the box, but there is a bit of spare coiled around under the base, you just pull the cable out of a clip and unwind it. It's fine. All in all, very pleased with the look, feel, function, and price here - it's fifty pounds elsewhere. EDIT - I see it's fifty pounds on here too now - it was a lot less when I bought it. FURTHER UPDATE: 6 months on from purchase, after functioning perfectly, the kettle broke. It suddenly started tripping the mains circuit breaker whenever it was turned on. I suspect moisture has got in to the electronics causing a short somewhere, but who knows... An email to Amazon asking how to get it fixed elicited a lightning fast reply that a new one was on the way, with instructions on how to return the old one within 30 days. New kettle duly arrived 2 days later, and is working. New Verdict: Kettle: Still like it, but not at all impressed that it should fail after so little time. Loses a star. I hope it's a one-off and the replacement is better. Amazon: Absolutely brilliant service, I wish all retailers were as good to deal with as this.

Great to have temp control, but otherwise several issues,

We shopped around extensively for a good kettle that would boil quickly and also gives a variety of temperature controls for making different kinds of drinks. Making different types of teas and coffees at different temps really does make a difference - I never believed it either, but now that I do it myself, I'm a believer.Anyway, this kettle offers amazing variability in terms of temp selection. The best we found, allowing you to select anywhere from 60-100C in 5 degree increments. It also looks very stylish with a brushed steel finish and blue electronic display. But, other than that, it's just like any other kettle. It actually even has a couple of aspects that I think are sub-standard. Firstly, it does not make any noise when it's done heating the water. If you're heating to boiling, you can obviously hear it when the water starts to roll and thus that's not a big deal. When heating to lower temps, though, you have to stand by the kettle because the only indication given is that the LED display stops blinking. If you're boiling a full 1.6L for a big group, that means you have to wait by the kettle for a while. Not a huge deal, but I liked the click my £5 argos kettle made. Secondly, for the power: this kettle is 3kW, which is markedly higher power than my super cheap Argos kettle (which I think was 2.2kW). However, this kettle does not seem to heat water much faster at all. It takes about 60 seconds to get 350ml to boil (two cups worth). Obviously there are bigger things wrong in the world than waiting 60 seconds for a cup of coffee, but in paying some £55 for this, I thought it would be better. Thirdly, the kettle itself is steel and is seemingly uninsulated, so it gets VERY hot. The handle stays perfectly cool so if you can manage a full kettle with one hand, it's fine. BUT, if you are older and just aren't particularly strong or have unsteady hands and would normally like to brace/support the kettle with your second hand as you pour, you absolutely cannot do that with this one. You also cannot forget as it stays hot for a long time afterward if you want to fill it up again. Lastly, and this is my biggest grip, is that the lid does not open well. You push a little plastic button and the lid on top *should* pop open for you to fill the kettle. But, when it's cold first thing in the morning, the lid sticks and you have to work your fingers under the edges to pry it up because there is no other grip or anything. Once you've boiled something in it, it works fine until it cools of again. But, it's obnoxious that it was not designed better in the first instance. I would recommend this kettle only for the variability it offers in terms of temp control. The underwhelming speed, shoddy lid, and super-heating sides, though, really knocked it down for me.

Great kettle,
This review is from: Russell Hobbs 15066 1.6 L Therma Select Temperature Control Kettle with Concealed 3 kW Element (Kitchen & Home)
It may not be the most beautiful kettle, but it is exactly what one needs if one drinks green tea (or other things that are best made with water at less than boiling point). Some tea is best made with water at 70, some at 75, some at 80 degrees. And you can make any tea come out best. (+ most coffee is ideally made with water at 95, and with intervals of 5 degrees from 65 to 100, it's good for that too.) VERY easy to use. If you just want regular boiling water, no setting at all is needed. And setting for particular temperatures is the easiest thing in the world.
