Keep warm side pockets
The Easy Toaster features two keep warm side pockets. view larger

Russell Hobbs design household items with real people in mind, so when they created the Easy Toaster they considered everything a toast lover could want. The space-saving design means you can have the benefit of a four-slice toaster but in the sleek format of a two-slice toaster, and when combined with the hot pockets toast keeps warmer for longer.

Space-saving keep warm pockets

Having pockets on the side means you can enjoy four slices of warm toast from a two-slice toaster – just toast your first two slices and pop them in the warming pockets while the next lot are toasting. The keep warm draws actually keep toast 30 per cent warmer compared to leaving your toast on a plate, which makes the toaster great if you haven't much room or only need to toast four slices occasionally.

Detachable side pockets
The pockets are removable for easy cleaning. view larger
Frozen bread and cancel functions

With the frozen bread function you can toast bread straight from the freezer. You don't even have to adjust the browning control away from your favoured setting: when selecting the option, toasting time will be altered automatically to give the same degree of browning you get with unfrozen bread. The cancel function allows you to cancel toasting mid cycle.

A decade or so ago no one cared what a kitchen appliance looked like, it was there to do a job and design was secondary. In this day and age though look and feel is more important but trading those looks for functionality is a tightrope we have to walk.

Luckily, this toaster manages to strike the perfect balance.

The toaster is extremely slim and takes up a lot less room than you would expect and it has the simple design of one side being completely flat so it sits snugly against the kitchen wall.

Like every toaster i've ever come across, it's still impossible to empty the crumb tray without a few crumbs going everywhere but after a dozen toasters in my lifetime which have all had the same failing i've given up on that design fault ever being solved!

One thing it does win brownie points on is with the warming pockets on the side so you can keep 2 slices warm while another two toast and the 'toast from frozen' option also works pretty well at the simple press of a button.

All in all, it's very well made and everything about it just screams 'quality' and i'm happy with it sitting in my kitchen

This is a great toaster in the respect of it has a single slot that you can easily fit 2 normal slices of bread into or if you have artisan (fancy) bread and it's wider than most then you will easily be able to toast one slice at a time. The pockets for keeping toast warm are a great idea. There are 4 of us in our family and it means that we can all sit down to warm toast at the same time.
Nice simple controls where you can thaw frozen bread and a dial you can change how toasted you want your toast. Nice blue light in the handle also so all looks good and works good.
My one gripe (and it's a fairly big one) is that the plastics they have used to make the body of the toaster are not great and never look really clean. They are clean it's just not a polished surface and will scratch easily.
If you don't mind that much how it looks and are not a clean freak then this is a great toaster for you. If you are a wee bit fussy and I admit that I am then look somewhere else.

All seemed well with this toaster at first, but then, a few weeks into use it nearly caused a fire as all the elements on one side stopped heating up and the ones on the other seriously over heated. Thank fully I was nearby and so a serious incident was avoided. I did test it our several more time under careful conditions but it really was kaput and so I had to send it back.

There is no getting around that this is a very stylish toaster, definitely the thing for someone who is looking for a kitchen that screams good taste as well as...uh...good tasting. And it does it's job well, producing evenly cooked toast.

But it's just a toaster, right? How hard can that be? So what am I really paying for?

Well, other than the look of it, the Russel Hobbs 19990 Easy Toaster (is there such a thing as a "Difficult Toaster"?) has two handy compartments on the front which you can keep a couple of slices of hot toast in while the next two are in the machine, and it will keep them warm until you are ready for them. However these compartments are not heated by anything other than the toasting function, so don't expect to come back twenty minutes later to hot toast!

The high lift feature is handy, especially when toasting pitta bread or crumpets or something small, allowing you to get at them without having to turn the thing over or start fiddling around trying to fish out your breakfast whilst simultaneously trying not to burn or electrocute yourself! The construction of the toaster with one long pocket instead of two shorter seperate ones mean that it is doubly suited for things like pitta bread which in the past I have had to toast twice - an end of it sticking out of the top of the toaster each time! However this also comes with another drawback: there is no warming rack for croissants etc. Finally I found that the outside of the toaster, particularly the back, did get quite hot after use. Not dangerously so, but this toaster clearly doesn't feature cool-wall.

But is it space saving? It's slim that's true, but it is very long and in my experience that kind of space is what is at a premium in a crowded kitchen.

A good looking toaster and worked well for a few weeks until it developed a fault which kept tripping our electric supply.

First the good: It toasts better than any other toaster I've ever had. Good and even. I think because the slices are in line rather than back-to-back, which is why I bought it, because in back-to-back models the centre side of the slices get more than a fair share of the heat and brown faster. And the side pockets do keep do keep toast warm.
The bad: The first time I have ever said it about the iconic brand of Russell Hobbs but It feels cheap. There are signs of penny pinching on things like the end of the lever having only a top half and the power cable being ridiculously / laughably / ludicrously / preposterously short. And this extends to other items in their range like the kettle my daughter bought.
The ugly: OK, it's subjective but, Shiny black plastic - ugh! Big, bold RH badge - ugh! and I'm not sure about the matt translucent side pockets. Overall - not a pretty site in most kitchens BUT it does the job,
and it does it well and, I hate to say it, but that's what counts the most.
