The fryer makes great chips. It has lots of good points and some bad ones. Firstly, the good points are it looks good. The container for the oil can be removed from the fryer so it is very easy to clean. There are two bad points..... firstly, when you drain the chips and leave them sitting on the fryer, the basket does not completely go above the oil. Therefore you end up with some of the chips still cooking away that are in the bottom of the basket. Secondly, this product has the SHORTEST cord to plug in the wall ever!! The cord is ridiculously short that we can't plug it into our socket on the worktop as the height of the product means it's nearly touching the bottom of the kitchen cupboards. We have had to use an extension lead which is a bit annoying but it works ok. My only other gripe is that the handle seems quite wobbly when it is closed and in the unit.

It has a few annoying points but generally its a good product and easy to clean. Would recommend.

The Russel Hobbs 17942 Deep Fat Fryer gives the appearance of being a sophisticated device but in fact is quite brutal in its simplicity. Its name is somewhat misleading, I can't be sure exactly what a `digital' fryer is but I am sure that this is not one. With regard to the timer the manual states `The timer doesn't control the fryer - use it as a reminder'. So what we have is a fairly basic electric deep fat fryer - that's no bad thing but it might be a disappointment if you were expecting something a little more intelligent.

Another disappointment is that there is no carbon filter fitted, the vent holes on the top of the unit are just that - holes in the top which do nothing to reduce odour, it would have been quite simple to have fitted a filter into the top.

One or two reviewers have commented upon the short cord. I measured it at 50cm which is quite short - not a problem for me but it does seem to be an inexplicable limitation.

Another comment some have made is that the bottom of the basket remains in the oil when it's taken out - I have found that the bottom of the basket is only just touching the surface of the oil even with the oil filled to the max line - I cannot say that I've found this to be a problem.

3.3 litres is a lot of oil. The basket is only 18cm x 15xcm and when empty the oil comes five cm above the bottom which means that only 40% of the oil is actually in the basket - this seems to be quite an inefficient use of space/oil.

The results of frying (and let's face it, this is the important aspect) are excellent however. The handling of the basket takes a little mastery but ultimately it works and fries food well enough. Even so I'm only going to give the Russel Hobbs 17942 three stars.

hia reviewing the russell hobbs fryer. well i wanted a fryer that was easy to clean! coz the others are so difficult to clean. i did'nt want the stainless steel one because of its long shape. this one however is a good shape to put into the cupboard. is easy as it come's apart. the lid the basket the bowl, all are washable an easy to remove. if i could say one bad thing about it . it would be that the basket is not large enough an there is more room for it to be that bit larger. but other than that it make great home made chips. easy to use. good shape, cool touch. ty beth

Oven chips, for me, simply did not taste as good as fried, so I decided after many years to go back to a deep fat fryer and as soon as I saw this one I had to have it as its design fitted right in with my existing equipment. After owning it for a few weeks here is my Unbiased review.

    Good Points

    Looks Fantastic.
    Heats up quickly.
    Easy to use.
    Produces great results.
Easy to strip down and clean.

    Not so Good

When you put oil in to the max point, the bottom of the basket sits in the oil so it will not drain so do not fill to the max, problem solved!
No temperature scale below 160 degrees, you need a thermometer to set it for lower temperatures.
The viewing window is a waste of time (as on all fryers) as it just steams up.
The timer needs a battery, Why? This is ridiculous.

    Conclusion

Despite these niggles, this is an absolutely superb fryer, it looks great and the taste of the food produced is excellent and it is really quick, cooking lovely chips in only a few minutes. I would buy this again in a flash, thus it gets 5 stars and is highly reccomended.

1 month on and the timer has packed up. I will be returning this item and exchanging it for another of the same. I have since dropped the rating to 4 stars.

The product seems solid and generally good albeit the basket device a little flimsy. The major issue for me is that when the basket is in the raised position to drain food, the bottom 1/2 inch of the basket is still in the oil so you need to fully remove the basket to drain the product.

Not happy with this deep fat fryer. Lead too short to not have it under/near wall units. Handle difficult to operate as you have to put a finger underneath the handle and press the top of same time. I have several Russell Hobbs items in my kitchen and have always considered them excellent for the jobs they are meant to do but this time I think it badly designed and sorry to have bought this (now returned)
