This is a pretty good unit - it arrived well packaged. I hadn't realised at the time of ordering, but the whole thing can open up i.e. the top plate can be released to give you two flat(ish) grill surfaces.
I have two reservations with this product - temperature setting and the non-stick surface.
There is no temperature control on the device. I find it is too hot for some things; if there is more than a little filling in the paninis, then it tends to burn the bread pretty badly along the grill lines before it has melted the contents. Bread should be toasted, not burnt. I was hoping to use this as a George Foreman style grill as well, and it sort-of works to this purpose, but again, it is too hot. Sausages burn on the outside whilst remaining pink in the middle.
The (non-removable) plates are coated in non stick covering. After 3 uses and washes, the non-stick is already showing some wear :( I have been gentle, and have used nothing more abrasive than a sponge. Some seared-on food seems to adhere strongly despite the coating. Cleaning it isn't the easiest, but then, I never expected it to be.
In summary, I wouldn't particularly recommend this product, but it isn't bad. If you just want to cook paninis in it, then this is a good product at a reasonable price. If you are wanting to use it as a grill also, I'd suggest your money is better spent elsewhere.

I have always enjoyed the occasional toasted sandwich and recently discovered our existing sandwich maker had given up the ghost. The old appliance was ok except that you had to butter the bread on the outside to stop it sticking and the absence of the floating hinge often led to the contents being squeezed out at the front as the lid was shut. After a quick visit to a couple of electrical high street stores and a look on the net I discovered this Russell Hobbs 3 in 1. The rest as they say "is history". Delivered by Amazon within 2 days of ordering and been using it almost daily since it arrived. Combinations of cheese, ham, tuna with onion have turned out perfect every time. The floating hinged top allows it to come down parallel to the base thus keeping the contents of the toastie in tact. Although it does not seal the edge of the sandwich I have not experienced problems with the contents oozing out. Ribbed grill plates are easy to clean. I believe this appliance is worth a closer inspection if you are looking for a replacement.

I have had several grills and 2 George Formans in the past but this Russel Hobs Grill is in my opinion by far the best. It cooks top and bottom at the same rate. It leaves a distict grill lines which makes meat, especially chicken look so much nicer It has a heavy top lid that flattens paninis so they cook as they should. Plus it grills in half the time. It is extremely good value and not at all expensive
