3.0 out of 5 stars No fill indicator 15 Nov 2009

Simple and straightforward kettle. Brushed steel appearance looks good in my kitchen. However, it lacks a fill indicator which means you need to open it to see how much water is inside. This is a major annoyance for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Kettle 20 Oct 2009
Verified Purchase
The Russell Hobbs 17874 kettle is a well finished and attractive product. It's efficient, good looking and boils very quickly.

The only thing I am not keen on is the filler size. Because of it's design I found the filling opening restricted and a little awkward.

2.0 out of 5 stars A number of important minus points 6 Feb 2011
On the plus side, it looks smart and boils quickly. On the minus side it is incredibly noisy, the metal jug part gets dangerously hot - so don't touch it when it is near boiling temperature and it doesn't have a water indicator which is not very helpful for those watching their electricity or water bills. Just bought it to replace another Russell Hobbs plastic kettle which had all the above plus features and had given excellent service for a number of years but was looking quite jaded. I can honestly say I had to think hard about disposing of it but having bought this new one, it (reluctantly) had to go. We are learning to live with this new kettle, but don't like it and would definitely not recommend it.

Addendum review - I have grown to like this kettle now over a year on from purchase. I have got used to it and would now recommend it with just a few minors. It does its job reliably and is functional and still looks very smart. Yes,a bit noisy, but I think that is par for the course with metal kettles but I think it will retain its looks longer than a plastic one which of course would be quieter to use. I would now give it 4.5 stars instead of my earlier harsh 2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good cattle for the price. 7 Mar 2010
By mixa
After realizing that boiling water in plastic few times per day and drinking it is maybe not the healthiest thing we decided to throw the old cattle and get this one. It is all metal inside, not even plastic indicator for the water level.

Good:
It is fast and has fancy button which opens the top automatically.
Well designed and comfortable to hold. Not too big, not to small.

What's not so good:

Noisy, I guess that is price for the speed.
The top lid could open a bit more.
Its metal body gets hot so don't touch it.
Overall, for the price it is very good, my wife and I like it and could recommend it to buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nasty taint wont rinse out 19 Aug 2010
Small kettle, looks nice but after many applications of sodium bicarb and boiling over some weeks it is still tainting drinks with a flavour of TCP. I have returned it to Russell Hobbs today and will let you know what happens. The Russell Hobbs customer service is responsive at least and they answer quickly.
A replacement arrived and it had same problem..we put it in its box in cupboard for years and forgot about it. Beginning of this year having moved house we needed a kettle in emergency, used it and found the taint had gone. Maybe the taint was created by the kettle and a certain type of region water?

2.0 out of 5 stars broke in less than 1 year 26 Aug 2011
Kettle performed ok for as long as it lasted - which wasn't very long. The element stopped working as like most is integral, cannot be replaced.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it claims & reliable 26 Feb 2013

Does what it says on the box. 3 years on since buying it, it's still going strong.

We live in a 'hard' water area and so only put filtered water into the kettle, so far no fur!

1.0 out of 5 stars a very odd smell from the base 9 Dec 2011
By chris
Verified Purchase
on the second week of using this kettle, tea tasted very strange. On inspecting the kettle there is a very strong smell of wax coming from the base near the on off switch. not sure if it is some kind of cheap insulation russell hobbs have used, or poor manufacturing leaving low quality soldering flux on the electrics. if you re boil standing water in this kettle it will taste very strange. use fresh water every time but be prepared that tea may taste a bit funky. my next kettle will be morphy richards. there is something very wrong with the construction or the quality of insulation used.
