I bought one of these kettles a couple of years ago from another supplier and was pleased with it. It doesn't take much water, but our drinks definitely tasted much better.

After less than a year it stopped working, so I returned it to Russell Hobbs, who replaced it. I had that one for just under a year and returned it again to Russell Hobbs who refused to replace it as it was over a year since the original purchase.

I don't believe I mistreat kettles and in fact don't actually make that many hot drinks, so I would suggest that this kettle is not very durable.

I usually don't spend more than £10 on a kettle, but have always used a filter jug for my fridge water. I decided to check out the price of filter kettles in my home shopping catalogues and online and was amazed when I found this one at under £20.00. Even more amazed that it came with a years supply of filters!

I've found the kettle a little heavy but suppose that this would apply to all filter kettles.

I'm happy with the design. The only possible niggle is that it is easy to overfill the kettle unless you take the advice of the booklet and measure the amount of water with a jug as you cannot exceed the 1 litre maximum. If you do, the kettle spills when you pour.

The good points are;
It filters a lot quicker than expected and boils really fast.
You can really see and taste the clarity of the water if you enjoy your teas!
The filters remove a lot of unwanted substances from your tap water and it is very economical with each filter lasting 2 months.

All things considered, I am really pleased with this kettle.

A lot of palaver! 20 July 2011
By S. D. Southam TOP 1000 REVIEWER
I fancied trying a filtered water kettle, as I live in a hard water = heavy limescale area and I'd heard that tea is supposed to taste much better when made with filtered water. Some have even reported that they no longer get limescale in the bottom of a filtered water kettle. So I purchased this one with 12 months supply of filters at a very good price. And it was only when it had arrived and I'd read all the instructions that I discovered what a palaver it was to use! I'm not saying that this one is any more of a palaver than any other make or model because they are probably all much of a muchness when it comes to preparing and installing new filters and filling them. This is a brief summary of the instructions you have to follow:

First time Use
1. Remove the reservoir from the kettle and remove all packaging.
2. Fill the kettle to Max (1 litre) and bring to boil. Discard the boiled water.

Preparing and fitting the filter
3. You should prepare a new filter by immersing it in a bowl of water and shaking it about until no more air bubbles escape from it. Because apparently, the filter will only work properly when all air has been expelled.
4. Remove the reservoir from the kettle and push the filter onto the base of the reservoir, turning it clockwise to lock it into place.
5. Replace the reservoir with the new filter attached.
6. Pour 1 litre of water into the reservoir using a jug to measure the water accurately. Wait for water to drip through the filter, then discard it.
7. Repeat step 6 again.
8. Your kettle and filter is finally ready to use!

OK, so you only have to follow steps 3-7 every two months. But even for everyday use, you are still advised to fill the kettle using a jug and told not to pour the water directly onto the filter, as apparently it may choke if you do! What a palaver! And after all that, the first cup of tea I made with it did not taste any better to me at all! In fact, it seemed to have more of a tang than ever - but perhaps tea is supposed to have that tang?

Anyway, having now discovered what a palaver they are to use, I think I'd rather use a Brita-type filter jug to filter the water and then fill a kettle with the ready-filtered water. But as I've tried it out, I cannot return it because it is no longer new. So I will either have to try and persevere with it or try and sell it on eBay.

The white plastic finish is not pretty but this kettle does the job, boiling quickly and relatively quietly. Easy to set up and use. Overall, good value.

Russell Hobbs Filter Kettle
Does what it says on the box. Capacity is a bit disappointing, you do have to keep filling it up for more than 3 cups of tea. Water filter works well, tea tastes much better.
