I think it was one of the adverts highlighting the cost to the planet and ourselves when purchasing bottled water that encouraged me to look at another way of acquiring water that didn't taste like it had come from the council swimming baths. I took the plunge and purchased the water cooler for £45 all in, and whilst at first the water had a plasticy tang to it, after a few days this disappeared and the water now tastes as good as the Evian water that we used to buy, but for a lot less money and cost to the environment. The only criticisms are that the water could do with being chilled 1 or 2 degrees lower and if you fill a pint glass the next person coming along has to wait a few minutes for the water to be chilled to temperature again. Having said that all the family are drinking far more water than before, it tastes great; to the point no one in the family will drink unfiltered water any more(it was only me before!)and we are doing our bit for the environment. The replacement filters last about 2 months and are pretty cheap to replace costing £2.75 each on the Amazon site for multipacks of 6.

The cooler failed just after the guarantee expired, i.e. the motor ran continously but the water stayed at room temperature.
For the 12 months it did work we found that after changing the 60 day filter the water had a "plastic" taste which would take several days to clear.
We live on the outskirts of London and the water here is truly atrocious to drink as well as hard as nails. We are now debating whether to return to bottled water or get a filter jug for the fridge.
If you take the cost of the chiller and add the filters and allow for it dying just after guarantee then bottled water comes close in cost and tastes miles better.
I suspect the filter jug for the fridge is a better bet financially as the fridge is probably more efficient and reliable depending on the make.

Just returned my 2nd Brita Aqua Fountain Water Filter Chiller back to Argos, it packed in again after 6 months and no longer cooled,so swapped for the Russell Hobbs, the Brita cools the water to 8 degrees C ,while the Russell Hobbs cools at 10 degrees C ,i havent noticed much diffence between the tempertures .The first thing you notice is that you get 3 filters total last of 180 days to the 1 filter that you get with Btita. The other good thing is theres no noise from fan and only took around 30 mins for it to cool.Theres no lights inside cooler like the Brita , meaning no more lighting my room up,lol ,the bad point to me is when the chiller reaches its cooling point, the indicator turns white ,which to me is a little brite, but overall im very happy with it...

This is a great little machine while it works, but that doesn't seem to be for long! First one gave up after a couple of months, and was replaced by retailer with no hassle. Second one lasted just over a year (ie. just long enough for the warranty to expire!) before it stopped cooling.
