With the dearth of filter coffee makers around, it can be hard to know what to choose... many look fabulous but have numerous faults - indeed the majority rely on a glass carafe and hotplate to keep coffee warm which can cause even freshly brewed coffee to taste stewed. The solution is a vacuum flask system, which is a revelation - coffee stays hot for up to 2 hours and won't taste stewed. Unfortunately, most retail from around £60 upwards, so this model is a sure bargain. It is very easy to clean, makes as good a cup of coffee as anybody who isn't completely 'frasier' about their coffee could want. Nice bonus feature is the detachable tank, which means there's no danger of overfilling the tank. Despite being labelled an 8-cup machine, it has a large capacity, more like 10 cups, which depending on how much coffee you make can be a plus or a minus - good if you need to make a lot, not so good if you don't, because if you only use less than half the machine's capacity you may not get full extraction from the coffee grounds, due to the shortness of the brewing cycle. A 1-3 cup special lengthened brewing cycle option would have help rectify this I suppose - but special features like that usually mean the spending more. Back to the positives though! - the machine looks very attractive on the worktop; black plastic casing has been kept to a minimum and that with the stainless steel 'open' styled filter basket holder gives means the machine looks smaller than it really is, a concern if you don't have a big kitchen.Read more ›

I've been using this for a few weeks now and its a lot better than my previous Russell Hobbs 3390 Satin Stainless Steel Coffee Maker that was somewhat flawed in my opinion (handles dropping off; plastics cracking; spillage when pouring; spillage when filling; auto-switch off not working)...

Good points:

1) Makes decent coffee.

2) Looks good.

3) Thermos style flask well built.

4) Removable water tank.

5) Coffee stays drinkably warm for around 1 hour.

6) Keen price.

Bad points:

1) Capacity far too large in my opinion for a typical household-the problem being it needs to be at least a third full to get decent extraction from the filter coffee.

2) No hotplate to preheat flask so you have to preheat with hot water yourself.

3) Auto-switch off again doesn't seem to work.

4) Plastic body flexes.

WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL FILTER COFFEE MAKERS OVER THE YEARS BUT THIS IS DEFINATELY THE BEST ONE IVE USED. IT MAKES A GREAT CUP OF COFFEE. EASY TO USE, FILL THE REMOVABLE TANK FROM THE BACK, PUT YOUR COFFEE IN THE WASHABLE FILTER AND SWITCH ON!!

THE CARAFE IS INSULATED SO DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO BE LEFT ON. WILL KEEP COFFEE WARM FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR.

NO NEED FOR PAPER FILTERS EVEN!!

IT ALSO LOOKS REALLY GOOD, BRUSHED STAINLESS STEEL AND SLIMLINE SO NO BULKINESS OF MANY OTHER COFFEE MAKERS.

WE GOT AN EXTRA ONE FOR CHRISTMAS FROM A FRIEND WHO LOVES HERS SHE THOUGHT WE WOULD LIKE ONE TOO!!! TOO LATE!!

DEFINATELY RECOMMEND THIS.
