I'm just coming back for my second machine now for my Mum and Dad!
The taste is excellant, I used Lyons Original Smooth medium roast coffee (£1.89 from asda).
It is exactly like the proper coffee at Restaurants.
It is so simple to use and the results are great. Also the flask type cups keep the drink warm unlike some where the coffee is cold by the time all the water has finished pouring in.
This machine is the perfect thing if this is your intention. You fill it up, let it do its job and then take the cup with you to work. It takes about 10 minutes to brew properly, and if you make both cups at the same time the coffee is still good (although that would also depend on your choice of ground coffee...). The drink stays hot (too hot to drink) for about an hour, if you keep both lids on.
Now the sip through lid is fine to use, but I have found that occasionally it leaks out of the side when you're drinking, so I recommend that you take the sip-through lid off if you're wearing pale colours - coffee stains are so not a good look!
The other lid is not watertight, so don't think that you can put the cup in your bag - you have to hold it upright otherwise it can come off and make a nasty mess...
The integral filter is a bit messy to clean, so I have bought a bumper pack of paper filters which I put in as well (so you just take it out when you're done and put it in the bin immediately - then sluice through some freshly boiled water and the thing is fairly clean again). If you just use paper filters without the integral filter (which is easily removed) you can have the paper break and then you get a blocked system - not much fun... Having paper filters as well means that you don't put the grounds down the sink - which is not the best thing to do if you want unblocked drains...
However, if all these rules are abided by you will have the perfect cup of coffee for a substantially less amount than you would pay on a daily basis.Read more ›
The cups do not fill up evenly and sometimes one side comes very close to overflowing and the other is only half full.
When the machine is first switched on the water that is filtered through is still cold. It helps to let a cup of water run through before filtering your coffee, but this is a pain when you are rushing to get out on time in the morning and really defeats the idea of having a machine primed to do the job.
The lids are not very commuter safe - they leak, they don't keep the drink hot (it is usually cold by the time my husband gets to his train)and they are not very pleasant to drink from either, the plastic leaves an unpleasant after taste.
I would recommend spending the money on a good commuter cup and getting up five minutes earlier to boil the kettle for your morning beverage!
