4.0 out of 5 stars Not What It Was, 3 May 2005
By A Customer
The K2S Kettle was superb, well-built and solid with years of service life and when it finally failed it seemed a good idea to find another, but times had changed and the new kettles all seem to come from China and have the same cordless base and the same basic design.

So look for another Russell Hobbs corded kettle and find it is not the same. In the old days Russell Hobbs belonged to Tube Investments, then ended up with Polly Peck and later under Salton with the acquisition of Pifco together with Haden and Carmen.

So it is just another brand name and another derivative product.....the kettle is not as solid as in the past and the inane concept of a water gauge is just another point for water to leak. So far the mains powe cord has had to be replaced, the little plastic plug being far weaker than on the K2S; and now the handle has started to separate from the vessel and water leaks from the front.

All in all not what it was. Seems you should buy cheap kettles nowadays and have the Chinese build a new one every two years for replacement. They wanted to make kettles a fashion item, looks like planned obsolescence is physical and not just aesthetic.

2.0 out of 5 stars Outdated, new ones not as good as the old ones, 8 Mar 2008
By Comical Engineer "comicaleng" (UK) - See all my reviews

A design classic? Yes - but obsolete and so it should be too!

Why would you buy it?
* Classic design
* It looks like the kettle your mum had
* It pours well

Why not?
* Element design means you have to have at least 1 pint / 0.5 litre of water in it, otherwise the element will overheat - not energy efficient like a flat base design
* Takes longer to boil than newer designs, partly because you have to put more water in it
* Water level gauge leaks!
* Difficult to de-scale (in hard water areas)
* Lead is prone to breaking at the kettle plug
* Built in China model is not as good as a made in UK one!

Summary:
Don't buy one of these. Buy a modern jug style with a flat base element. That way you can boil just a cup full if you need it and save energy, it will heat up faster and be easier to clean. A design classic that should be consigned to a museum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kettle forever, 10 Dec 2003
By A Customer
I have had an older model of this kettle (K3) for over 16 years. I have travelled in 3 countries and used the kettle changing the plug. It has never had any problems with contant use. Never changed the element.
The only disadvantage is they are so good you do do not get a chance to buy a new kettle!

I had one of these and the plastic lid started to disintegrate after a few years. To be fair Russell Hobbs agreed to replace it with a different model at half price. Read more
