Product Description

Ruskie: Beers, Bears & Babushkas Ruskie: Beers, Bears & Babushkas shows a picture of Russia, Russian Business and the Russian People as they really are. Admittedly, they don't all drink copious amounts of Vodka but some of them do. Not all Russian women threaten to cut off their fingers as proof of their love for someone, then again some of them do. In general, Businessmen in Moscow don't go around shooting their competitors in order to make sure their business succeeds, but, you guessed it, once again some of them still do! Matthew Francis, a young Englishman, arrives to set up a 'Western Style' consulting practice in Moscow and gives a hilarious account of the pleasures and perils of being a Brit in Russia. Faster than a Russian woman chasing a designer handbag, scarier than being threatened by the Moscow Mafia, and sexier than watching Maria Sharapova play tennis in her underwear. Or maybe not! One thing for sure, this is a story of the Real Russia, the Russia you definitely don't read about in the newspapers!

About the Author

Matthew Francis has spent the last ten years working with global organisations, some of which have been in remote and sometimes hostile locations. The majority of experience he has gained has been in Russia & The Commonwealth of Independent States. This included five years running his own communications practice in Moscow between 2002 and 2007. Primarily Matthew was advising Russian organisations on their overseas development strategies but his links into overseas Embassies, Networking Organisations and Business Schools, meant that many Western brands were drawing on his skills and experience to advise them on their Russian entry strategy. Matthew draws on a wealth of experience having lived and worked in Russia as well as advising Russian companies from the UK. He is a recognised expert on Russian Business & Cultural Affairs as well as the current Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations's International Group in London. He has an MBA from Cass Business School and sits as a Borough Councillor in Rugby, Warwickshire where he now lives. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From Russia With Love 18 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Matthew Francis has captured the essence of business and life in Russia in this book which is both enjoyable and a goldmine of intelligence for anyone who wants to live and work in Russia.

As someone who spent 4 days on the Trans Siberian Express, many of the stories brought back great memories of the idiosyncracies of living and working in Russia.

The book is relevant to people living or working in Russia and just as valuable for Russians living and working elsewhere. I think that President's Obama and Medvedev ought to consider it essential reading to help their respective super powers find better ways to work with one another.

Although many things have changed in Russia over the last 20 years, fans of James Bond will find some great reflections of that classic period in our history suitably modernised. Baboushka takes on a new meaning for me - previously I had it etched on my mind as the wonderful song by Kate Bush. Matthew has successfully refreshed my understanding of the role of stoic women in Russian society.

A Russian friend put me onto this book - and what a find!
Hilarious fun from cover to cover, written in a style reminiscent of the late, great Douglas Adams.
Francis takes through the highs and lows of an Englishman doing business in Russia...
Thoroughly recommended!

An Amazing Read 3 July 2009
Format:Paperback
This book really is a hilarious look at life in Russia from the perspective of a foreigner. Not only is it accurate but really amusing, from my perspective as a Russian, to see how foreigners manage to survive and prosper in Russia. A great read and highly recommended.
