A Great Workout! 18 Jan 2011
By T. Raliben - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
I took a chance on this exercise dvd series and ordered it direct from the manufacturer's website last December. I'm glad I did as these are the best fitness dvds that I own. The entire series spans six discs, but I'll just be reviewing the "Strength & Endurance Workout" here.

The dvd is well produced and offers a balanced, high intensity, total body workout. The trainer Erik Owings does a great job of demonstrating the proper form for each exercise and makes sure everyone follows it. Georges is upbeat, encouraging and really attacks the workout. A timer at the bottom keeps track of which exercise is being performed and tracks the time remaining for each round and the entire workout. All of the exercises are performed at a demanding, fast pace. If you keep pace with everybody you should be thoroughly sweaty and exhausted by the end. The workout has a wide variety of exercises which I go into detail below.

Before I do, I want to list any potential drawbacks of the dvd. The trainer Erik does a terrific job but comes across as being very serious. Personally I like this, but if you're looking for something with a more outgoing instructor like Bob Harper, keep in mind you don't get that in this dvd. Also, the workout might not be long enough for some people. Altogether, with the warm up and cool down included, it lasts 47 minutes; about 35 minutes of that I'd categorize as non-stop high intensity exercise. Lastly, this is a program designed for people of intermediate to advanced fitness levels. I would not recommend this dvd to beginners.

The warm up takes eleven minutes and consists of the following exercises which you perform for around 60 seconds each: 1) torso twists, 2) side bends, 3) walk outs (from a standing position walk out on your hands to a push-up position, then with your legs walk until your feet are right behind your hands and stand up), 4) backward lunges, 5) walk out push-ups, 6) lateral lunges, 7) push-ups + alternating lateral planks, 8) air squats, 9) opposite leg + arm extensions while on all fours, and 10) straight ups.

From there you go into the actual workout which is made up of five rounds, each lasting around 5 minutes. Round 1 consists of 60 seconds each of air squats, iso squats, hands off push-ups (like a regular push-up except you very briefly rest chest on floor and raise hands off ground in between), a back extension, and pop-ups (in a single hop you go from a kneeling position to a standing one; thankfully they demonstrate a modification for this one). For round 2 you do more air squats, then squat thrusts, push-ups, burpees, and alternating lateral planks. Round 3 exercises all involve two dumbbells and include lateral lunges, the overhead press, bent over rows, alternating upright rows, and rotating curls (go back and forth between curls and reverse curls switching at the top). For round 4 you use a single heavy dumbbell for around the world, single arm swings, high pulls, one leg single arm rows, and the diagonal press. Finally it all ends with floor exercises for round five which include the single hand twisting floor press, half get-ups, and finishes with prone alternating dumbbell rows.

Overall, "GSP Rushfit Strength & Endurance Workout" proves to be an exhausting but rewarding routine and I highly recommend it. A few of my other favorite exercise dvds are The Kung Fu Kickboxing Workout and the "Bob Harper: Inside Out Method" dvd series.

Great workout video, needs more George less of the other Guy! 9 Mar 2011
By D. Hamlett - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Pros:

* The workout is not a bunch of women in tights doing dance like aerobics to 80's sounding music, like 99% of workout videos. Dont get me wrong, it's for men and women, but a lil more biased towards men.

* The workout is challenging. So challenging that you can see George struggling through it. It's kinda cool because unlike most videos where the star of the video is breazing through the exercises, George doesn't have these moves down, and as he admits profusely.

* George says that this kind of training is his weak area so he's pushing with you. This video should have been named inside GSP's conditioning class, because the Trainer Eric Owings is really pushing George.

* It helped me to realise that I am mildly Sado Masochistic, any self realization is a personal pro for me sorry if it's TMI. I say Sadist, because I enjoy seeing George suffer, The french accent and the clear pain and discomfort is "great". Masochistic because I am looking forward to pushing myself through it.

* It is a very complete program in that it is broken down into 3 important components; a warmump, a challenging workout, and flexbility based cool down.

* The video makes you feel like George's incredible atheltic conditioning is within reach, you know it's not, but it makes you feel like it is.

* You get to see Georges attitude when hes doing the excercises. He even talks about how he pushes himself through each excercise as if his life depended on it. Now granted you may not want to adopt this attitude but it's good to see it at work.

* There is another part of the video called foundation moves, that walks you through all of the excercise, how to do them, and how to modify them if necessary.

* Production quality of the video is excellent, and it constantly shows you a clock to let you know were you are in the workout.

* The workout doesnt require alot of space or alot of equipment. In fact all you need are a set of 10-15lb dumbbells, determination, and a dont quit attitude. Though not necessary a masseuse would be a really great extra.

The Cons:

* Georges doesn't speak enough in the video. I was hoping to hear a French guy with bad English yelling at me to keep pushing through the movements. However, I have to say that if I just saw Erik on the cover and no GSP I may have overlooked the video.

* Erik and Georges should have gone over their resumes before this video to put who they are and their skills sets in better perspective.

* The verbal exchanges between Geroges and Trainer Erik Owings are not smooth. Owings seems almost codescending at times when George is speaking. They never have natural conversations, e.g. Owings is giving a excercise, George grunts in some commentary, and Owings just moves onto the next excercise with a almost like yeah lets stop wasting time and get to the next exercise type attitude.

* They are pushing extra hard to relate all the excercise to fighting. Erik Owings is a pedigree Martial Artist and a seasoned fighter, but in the video it always seems like he is pushing to try to correlate the exercises to real fighting, and he is constantly looking to George for validation and coloring. What is irritating is that the GSP coloring isnt even needed for Erik who is a Gracie Barra black belt, who trained Muay Thai at Fairtex, and fought in the IFL. I am positive Erik is extremely sure what all these exercises do and don't do in a grappling match, the octagon or the ring. The exchanges would have been far more natural if they had talked about their own fights or shown clips of fights in which they had to use movements like sprawls and stand ups or even made reference to what moves help what sort of combative techniques. Don't ge me wrong its a great workout, but IMHO they are over selling the fight aspect of this training a little bit too much in this video.

* I know they were trying to make this workout require as little equipment as possible, but I was looking at Kettlebell movements like getups and swings with out kettlebells. Kettlebells are now very affordable and within economic reach of the general public thanks to Walmart, and they could have at least been included in the foundation moves segment of the video. Dumbbells and Kettlebells have different centers of gravity which make the same movements when performed with both pieces of equipment very different. The dumbell movements are great, but I just would have liked to have seen the equivalent Kettlebell movements in the foundations moves segment.

Would have been nice to have:

* It would have been nice to have seen better progressions for the excercises, during the workout component of the video. They kinda sorta showed the easier variations with the female fitness model, and for those mutants who will do this workout there are no advanced variations for the exercises except for the few that he demonstrated with George. It is important that I add that to make the excerices more challenging they said to increase the tempo and the weight you use to perform the excercises, but none of the fitness models demonstrated this.

* The ability to turn off the background music and just keep the vocal instructions in the video, so that you can use your own music for the workout.

* This is a 8 week program, and this is just 1 of 6 videos. It would be nice to able to credit this purchase towards the purchase of the whole 8 weeek program. However, I can't complain because this was only $10.00 pre-order, the 4 base videos on the website are only 69.99 and the 8 week program is only $89.99.

Summary:

If you are a want a challenging, non aerobics type workout video that will help lose weight and improve your overall conditioning and functional strength then this is the video for you. Most important of all the price of this video is so amazingly cheap, that you can not afford not to have it in your workout library. Thanks Georges and Erik!

I purchased the entire series and they are all terrific! 1 Feb 2011
By Richardson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Like the first reviewer I found the entire series on the net and purchased it. They are all uniformly first class and look great on a widescreen monitor/television as they are 16x9 aspect ratio. Rather than repeat everything the first reviewer wrote in his near perfect recap I'll add this bit. Each DVD (I assume they will all be offered for individual sale) has the SAME warm up routine, and warm down routine..in fact its the same footage...so each workout is truly only about 40+or- minutes of new material. Each DVD is rated at 100 minutes and that includes a series Promo, and lesson Promo...as well as a very good feature called FOUNDATIONS which is a 40 plus (my memory fades it could be longer) session where the instructor and St-Pierre demonstrate the correct form for many of the exercises used in the programs and this is also repeated on every DVD. I think its fine to have these repeats as it makes a single purchase more valuable and doesn't cause me to think I was jipped on the entire set. For the entire set the DVDs end up being about 10 bucks each and I've really enjoyed working with them. I'm a middle aged guy in very very good shape and by the 5th cycle in each one I'm challenged to finish with correct form.
