If "strawberries," the Fireman's last outing, left you cold with its repetitive variations on a techno theme, but you're still hungry for more McCartney (after "Run Devil Run", of course), you might consider giving "Rushes" a try. The title is a great Beatles pun ("The fireman rushes in..."); the music a gorgeous collage of sound: guitars, sitars, synths, meshed with samples of Paul and Linda, horses galloping, a woman in the throes of passion, each track flowing seemlessly into the next. Released after Linda's death, one wonders (especially with repeated listenings) if McCartney hadn't intended "Rushes" to be a tribute to her. While the influence of Youth (a.k.a Martin Glover, former Killing Joke bassist) is well in evidence, "Rushes" feels more of a collaborative effort. This is one of my favourite albums to write to (and it's not bad for making love to, either). Incidentally, the nude woman you'll find on the tray insert under the CD is Julie Lewis, photographed in the 70's by Pin-Up Queen Bunny Yeager.
