About the Author

Alfred Bestall is best-known worldwide for his stories about Rupert Bear. He started illustrating and writing the Rupert Bear stories for the Daily Express in 1935. His finest artwork and the best, and most popular, stories have been reproduced in this treasury. Great care and sensitivity has been given not to interfere with his original work. Lavishly illustrated, this book captures the imagination. Caroline Bott is the authority on Alfred Bestall and as his goddaughter gives a very personal insight into his work in the Introduction. Prolific broadcaster, presenter, novelist, biographer and former Conservative Party politician, Gyles Brandreth is best-known for his appearances on Countdown and TV AM. In 2006, Brandreth appeared in the BBC Radio 4 comedy Living with the Enemy.

Mad About The Bear 10 Mar 2008
By The Kinniburgh Kid TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is a beautifully produced book, a joy to hold and flick through.

I guess most Rupert followers will have many or all of the stories from other books, but it is still a nice addition. As an introduction (or re-introduction) to Rupert for an adult it is perfect.

As well as selected stories there are some large reproductions of the atmospheric full page illustrations. Even if you never read a word, the pictures will take you out of today and yourself to Nutwood and the world of Rupert and his "chums".

Having bought the 1955 annual I had no hesitation in ordering this collection. Wow I was so impressed whe I first opened it. Fantastic insight into Alfred Bestall the illustrator of Rupert. However my delight turned to dissapointment when I came to the main story pages. Why on earth has the format been changed from having 4 pictures per page to only 2? Obviously this makes the book twice the thickness it needs to be and I would much prefer they kept the original format. It was a complete spoiler as Rupert books were never laid out like this and it spoils the memories somewhat.
