Product Description

Flame haired Northern Irish singer-songwriter Janet Devlin is back, stronger than ever and set to release her debut album ‘Running With Scissors’. This 10-track, full of folk-driven pop songs and heart touching ballads, showcases Janet’s unique and enchanting vocals, which first caught the public’s attention on Series 8 of The X factor. Mainly self-penned by Janet and recorded in a staggering 6-weeks, the album also features co-writes with Newton Faulkner (‘Creatures of The Night’ and ‘Hide And Seek’) and Jack Savoretti (‘Delicate’), alongside a surprising cover of The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m In Love’.

Influences ranging from Imogen Heap, Turin Brakes, Adele, Mumford & Sons, Avril Lavigne, Regina Spektor and Florence & The Machine can be heard within this well-produced album full of rolling percussion, lush harmonies, string sections and acoustic guitars. There’s even a hint of Jack Johnson thrown in there on the track ‘Lifeboat’, which features jaunty offbeat guitars. It’s an album about growing up, becoming independent and dealing with a whole range of new emotions. For example, ‘Things We Lost In The Fire’ is hewn from the embers of the breakdown of her relationship with her first true love.

I know that it's a bit of a backhanded compliment to marvel that something is "actually good." But let's face it: Most albums put out by reality show contestants are given unwarranted praise. As viewers, we tend to build almost parental emotional investment in the people we (think we've) come to know on the show. So when they finally sign that record deal, they can (and do) basically release any kind of muddy, uninspired set of cover tunes that they were forced into recording in a 2-day marathon, and we fans start handing out the 5-Star "Masterpiece" reviews like these people are the second coming of Mozart. We just want to do anything to help their careers, even though deep down we know that often these albums are kind of "meh" when judged by actual album standards.

The funny thing about Janet Devlin's full debut album "Running with Scissors" is that, it's actually good. One can throw out all the "parental bias" and it's still a really fine pop/folk album. It stands on its own.

And unlike a lot of other X-Factor-type offerings, we KNOW that this is not just a "phone it in" thing. This was made clear to people on her mailing list when she made the announcement that she was scrapping all the songs she'd originally released to pledgers and that the final album would take many months more than originally planned. She simply wasn't pleased with some of the arrangements. Apparently Janet is a perfectionist. She isn't going to be slapping together some half-assed cover tunes thing to cash in on the public's short attention span. Heck, she apparently isn't going to even be slapping together a half-assed album of ORIGINAL material.

I'm such a fan of Devlin's unique voice and charming singing that I would have been fairly happy with an album of cover tunes and mediocre filler material. This album, however, is so much more than that. I can't believe the quality of this debut album by a teenager from a talent contest. This album is full of engaging melodies, foot-tapping fun, strong arrangements, compelling lyrics, and most importantly, Devlin's voice put to good use. Running With Scissors is my favorite pop album in ages!

I pledged for this album quite some time ago, so I have had the pleasure of listening to eleven of Janet's tracks for quite some time. Only four of those tracks made it onto this album, which means I have six more, brand new tracks to listen to.

All of them are great. Some changes have been made to the four original tracks - mostly improvements - and the other six are excellent.

If I had any criticism it would be that to some of the lyrics feel a little uncomfortable - particularly some parts of Lifeboat and Delicate - they don't fit together as smoothly as they could. Also, Hide and Seek has some afwul scratchy-clicky-record sounds on it, which disappear once the chorus kicks in. Perhaps they are supposed to add an olde worlde feel to the verses, but I find them distracting and unnecessary.

However, every single track has Janet's totally addictive voice on it and that is worth five stars on its own.

If there's an artist that deserves an audience it's Janet Devlin who had the courage to turn down record deals that would have relinquished control, and instead took the risk of crowd-funding her own album. It definitely worked! The result is Running With Scissors which wonderfully showcases her unique writing and vocal talent. I've always felt that Janet's ability to vocally convey vulnerability was her greatest asset, and that this is what originally endeared her to the X factor nation with Your Song. It's a rare skill, I've never heard anyone do it better than Janet, and it seems to involve punctuating a song with silence. The finest example of this vulnerability here appears in Whisky Lullabies, a genius of a song, which is worth the album price alone! So, if you want to make someone's day, buy them Running With Scissors!

I bought this CD directly from Janet's website, helping to fund its release. I am extremely pleased that I did. I have been a long term watcher of the X-Factor, and every now and again, someone appears on that show and demonstrates real promise. Janet is one of those people, and having now listened to her debut album on many occasions, I would definitely say that it is without doubt the best album from any person that has appeared on the X-Factor (winners or otherwise). More than that, this album is simply sublime with beautiful vocals, a lovely lilt to Janet's voice and some catchy and meaningful lyrics. I would strongly recommend it to anyone, don't be put off by the platform on which she came into the public eye. Listen to the album and you will be equally captivated.

In concert Janet is a truly talented and charismatic performer, qualities that are delightfully displayed in her debut album.

This is a captivating collection of songs with real integrity, and the heartfelt lyrics will make you want to reach out and give her a hug. Her voice is so distinctive and beautiful that goose bumps of pleasure are inevitable. But above all it’s fun, leaving you with a smile and humming the memorable tunes for hours to come.

Wonderful indeed.
