Book Description

Why does Freddie Swann quit her engagement and flee on the eve of her wedding? Set in deepest Dorset, an enchanting story full of surprises, wonderful characters, and Clayton's special brand of sparkling intelligence. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Elfrida Swann, known to everyone as Freddie, is about to marry Alex. Preparations for the great day - service at Westminster, reception at Claridges - are on schedule; the bridesmaids' bouquets made up; the cake decorated. Then Freddie decides that she cannot go through with it. Unable to face the indignation and fury of Alex, her parents, or anyone else, she flees to a friend's cottage in Dorset. At first sight its state of dilapidation is so extreme that Freddie decides she cannot possibly stay there. But she has reckoned without the attentions of Guy Gilderoy; the culinary delights of the Rector and his wife; a family of neglected children; and the primitive and secret shrines she finds in her garden. In her attempts to make sense of her new life, Freddie discovers much about herself that is surprising as the ghosts of her childhood are laid to rest.

Romance or Comedy ? 29 Sep 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved this book. Maybe the characters are conventional - beautiful heroine, sinister lover, daffy friends and noble hero but that is all part of the charm of the story. I enjoyed the sly traces of everything from A Comedy of Errors to Cold Comfort Farm, and parts of it made me laugh out loud. This is escapist fiction at its best, and definitely a book to be kept and reread whenever you feel a bit down(just like her other books)

It is better than chocolate.

Lovely flowing writing style, interesting snippets of info introduced along the way.
A book to lose yourself in.

I was eagerly awaiting this book after enjoying her previous ones very much indeed. It proved to be a great disappointment.Where her previous characters have been strong and capable as in "Out of Love" or entertainingly scatty as in "Dance with Me",the main character in this book is merely irritating and comes over as being rather dim.Other characters like the slightly sinister miller seem to have little relevence to the plot and are tiresomely like caricatures.I have struggled through this twice to be sure that I wasn't making a hasty judgement but it remains her worst effort by a long way.
