Book Description

3 Sep 2009

An epic and heart-rending jungle adventure from the bestselling author of Kaspar and Born to Run.

For Will and his mother, going to Indonesia isn't just a holiday. It's an escape, a new start, a chance to put things behind them - things like the death of Will's father.

And to begin with, it seems to be just what they both needed. But then Oona, the elephant Will is riding on the beach, begins acting strangely, shying away from the sea. And that's when the tsunami comes crashing in, and Oona begins to run. Except that when the tsunami is gone, Oona just keeps on running.

With nothing on his back but a shirt and nothing to sustain him but a bottle of water, Will must learn to survive deep in the jungle. Luckily, though, he's not completely alone…

He's got Oona.

From the Back Cover

"The elephant lifted her trunk and began trumpeting at the sea, tossing her head as if something out there terrified her. She swung around, and before the mahout could stop her, she was running towards the tree.

I held on for dear life, as she stampeded up the beach, and into the shadows of the jungle ..."

5.0 out of 5 stars Another superb book from Michael Morpurgo 18 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
Michael Morpurgo proves once again what a superb writer he is by weaving together current issues with a compelling situation concerning a young boy left running wild in Indonesia. The result is unexpected, emotional but above all thrilling and real. A fantastic read for young and old alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for children 18 Nov 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book should not be confined to the chidren's book section. All ages in our family have read it from 91-year-old great-granny downwards. It is exciting, moving and deals with real life problems. Death, loss, fear are all there, plus the uplifting relationship between a boy and an elephant which is totally believable. A wonderful story for everyone. If you can't think of anyone to buy it for, buy it for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting with lots of twists! 9 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
This book has everything! I have been reading it to my year 5 class and they love it. I ask them what they think will happen next but not one of them is correct when guessing. Michael morpurgo brings the reader right into this book and takes you on an unexpected adventure! I also read one of his short books, toro toro, this was also a fantastic read.
