This is the most eclectic album I've heard in a long time. Is Charlie Winston a pop, rock, blues, Broadway, electronica, hip hop, or folk singer? The good news, if by some wild chance those genres of music are your favorites, well Charlie Winston's Running Still is your nirvana. This album goes wildly from a few songs that I like a lot to the equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard.
Charlie Winston has a good pleasant voice. His tone is in the neighborhood of Peter Gabriel or Robert Palmer, a medium warm sound. He's a little less John Legend on this album. I don't own Winston's previous release, Hobo. Listening to the preview clips of Hobo, this album sounds much more produced with a fuller sound - more orchestration. They are both incredibly eclectic albums. Oddly, Gabriel's studio was involved in his first album.
Winston has a very talented back up band. The recording is ultra clean and clear. The mix is spot on, just the right level of vocals and instruments. Lyrics are crystal clear and understandable.
In the end, this album was just way too diverse for my tastes. The album is not of one piece, it is a mix of so many genres, and I just can't listen to the whole thing. I'll be picking and choosing songs to keep, the others will fall out of play rotation. The strange thing, Winston didn't include and country music. He could have hit the bit lottery win if he did that - or at least hedged his bet.
My guess, somebody that loved Hobo, will love this album.
