Billy Crystal is simply excellent in this movie, and Gregory Hines seems to relish working with such a comedic [camera loving] talent. There is a real sense of camaraderie and friendship that transcends the movie and it's this that really makes the movie work. The story itself is some ridiculous plot about drug smuggling within Chicago (what better setting for a cop buddy movie), but really what carries the film are the jokes, the general banter and the chemistry between the two lead characters. You'll also get to spot actors on their way up Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix, Bad Boys) and Jimmy Smits (NYPD Blue, LA Law, Star Wars Episode III), but it's Crystal and Hines who really make the lasting impression.
Far from perfect, Running Scared is a great cult comedy movie. Like any 80s movie if you really analyse it on paper it doesn't work, but if you can capture the mood of a decade so well as this film does it deserves a watch for that alone. If you like your humour fast-paced and scatter gun, and plenty of action (car chases along an elevated subway track!) - not to mention a large dollop of 80s memorabilia (roller boots, 'shine sweet freedom' by Michael McDonald, fingerless gloves etc.) then this is the perfect way to spend a Friday night with your friends. This is a totally unobjective review because I love this movie so much, and I think if you're the sort of person who loves trashy 80s movies simply because they're trashy 80s movies you'll love this film too.
I actually own the US version of this DVD, which has an excellent transfer and just enough extras to stop you having to wait for a Special Edition. I'm glad to see they've kept the US artwork, which alone makes me laugh.
This film stands out from all the other comedy cop-duo films in a big way - the humour comes first and the storyline neatly complements it. Basically, it doesn't take itself seriously so you know where you stand with it. Billy Crystal, Gregory Hines and Joe Pantoliano provide excellent performances which come across as completely natural and you instantly warm to them. The pace is just right, the look and feel is 80s and the one-liners hit the mark. I have watched this film on more than one occasion because it is pure entertainment.
Will they ever make it to The Keys?
Watch and you'll find out!
