I loved this book, and its successors 'For A Pagan Song' and 'Silk Dreams, Troubled Road' - they form a great travel trilogy and, I think, should be republished as such. Jonny Bealby is a fluent and intelligent writer who uses imagery, dialogue, narrative, and other tools from the writer's toolbox so skilfully that he brings his journey to life. Also, he is candid about his own motivations and predilections, which makes him an entertaining (armchair) travelling companion.
I have no interest in motorbikes and don't care if I never go to Africa, yet I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For me, I think it was the combination of Jonny Bealby's personal honesty and his excellent writing that made it such a good read. He weaves his emotional and physical journeys together beautifully, drawing the reader along with him. Highly recommended.
