This book covers the bare minimum. The small 'getting started' guide covers a large amount of the content of this book. Just as much info can be gleaned from the documents on the CD. Also, this is out of date. With 4.5 out, this 4.0 based book is of little value.

If you want to beat any of the problems a newcomer faces managing this collection of programmes - then this is not the book. A representitive gem repeated for several Control Panel settings "... unless you know what you are doing we advise leaving these settings alone . In most cases the default settings are the appropiate ones." gives an idea of the enlightenment dished out. It makes you wonder who is the bigger fool, the authors or the purchasers. It may give some reassurance before you start to install SBS but ducks admitting there are any problems and so does not give any solutions even during the install phase itself.

While totally dissecting Small Business Server, Russell & Crawford have managed to make this book an enjoyable read. It dives deep into every aspect of SBS without resorting to a lot of terrible technical language. Plain English is used throughout and everyday examples are given in order to make subjects easier to understand. Not just a complete reference dictionary, but a valuable learning guide for the novice user to the professional administrator.

If you expect this book to explain what the software documentation doesn't, forget it. This book gives no more information than does the Start Here Manual and the Online Guide included with Small Business Server. This book just uses three times as many words. Small Business Server does not live up to its promise of ease of setup and ease of use, nor is this book of any help.

The biggest problem with this book is that it is written for version 4.0. Because of all the changes that were made to version 4.5, especially in the area of Internet connectivity, this book is not all that helpful and I wasted my money on it.

I found this book extremely useful as an introduction to SBS, although it does not cover any of the 4.5 features. I would still recommend it to some-one implementing / administering a server for the first time.
